Major Bhargav Kalita Awarded Shaurya Chakra for Exceptional Bravery in Counter-Terror Operations
New Delhi, June 2026 : Major Bhargav Kalita of the Kumaon Regiment’s 50th Battalion of the Rashtriya Rifles has been conferred the prestigious Shaurya Chakra, one of India’s highest peacetime gallantry awards, in recognition of his extraordinary courage, exemplary leadership and distinguished service during counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir.
President Droupadi Murmu presented the gallantry award at the Defence Investiture Ceremony-2026 (Phase-I) held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday. The ceremony was attended by C. P. Radhakrishnan, Narendra Modi, and Rajnath Singh, among other dignitaries.
According to Defence spokesperson Lt Col Mahendra Rawat, Major Kalita has played a key role in several successful counter-terrorism operations since October 2022. His operational achievements include the neutralisation of three dreaded terrorists and the apprehension of four hardcore overground workers, significantly contributing to security and stability in the region.
A native of Assam, Major Kalita has earned recognition for his unwavering commitment to duty and operational excellence. His leadership in challenging and high-risk missions has strengthened anti-terror operations in Jammu and Kashmir.
One of the most notable actions leading to the award took place on December 2, 2024. Acting on specific intelligence received at short notice, Major Kalita meticulously planned and led a surgical ambush operation targeting a hardened terrorist. Demonstrating exceptional tactical skill and fieldcraft, he strategically deployed his team to achieve complete surprise and patiently waited for the target to enter the designated ambush zone.
When security forces challenged the terrorist at close range, the militant responded with indiscriminate firing and attempted to flee. Major Kalita reacted swiftly, directing accurate fire while skilfully manoeuvring his troops to block all possible escape routes. He ensured constant surveillance and suppressive fire, effectively pinning down the terrorist and preventing any opportunity for escape.
As the operation intensified, Major Kalita displayed extraordinary personal bravery. Ignoring the grave danger to his own life, he crawled toward the concealed terrorist under hostile fire. Showing remarkable composure, determination and courage, he closed in on the target and engaged in a fierce close-quarters encounter, ultimately neutralising the terrorist.
Subsequent investigations revealed that the eliminated militant was an “A-category” terrorist responsible for the killing of seven innocent civilians and multiple deadly attacks on security personnel.
The Army described Major Kalita’s actions as a shining example of courage under fire, tactical brilliance and inspirational leadership. His ability to lead from the front, maintain operational control under extreme pressure and accomplish a critical mission despite immense risk reflected the highest traditions of the Indian Army.
For his outstanding gallantry, fearless execution of duty and exceptional leadership in combat, Major Bhargav Kalita has been honoured with the Shaurya Chakra, adding another chapter to the legacy of bravery and sacrifice upheld by India’s armed forces.
