Netanyahu Says Military Action Against Iran Paused, Warns of Strong Response to Any Fresh Attack
Jerusalem, June 2026 : Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday said that military hostilities between Israel and Iran have temporarily subsided, while making it clear that Israel remains prepared to respond decisively if Tehran launches any further attacks.
In his first televised address more than 20 hours after Iran fired missiles towards Israel on Sunday night, Netanyahu stated that the immediate exchange of fire had come to a halt because Iran had ceased its attacks.
“At the moment, the fire is on hold because Iran has stopped attacking us,” Netanyahu said, adding that the situation remains under close observation by Israeli authorities.
The Israeli leader, however, issued a stern warning to Tehran, saying that any renewed aggression would be met with a forceful military response.
“If Iran makes the mistake of attacking us again, we will respond with force,” he declared.
Netanyahu revealed that he had directed the Israeli military to carry out strikes on a range of military and economic targets inside Iran on Monday as part of Israel’s response to recent developments. While he did not provide detailed information about the operations, the statement underscored Israel’s readiness to retaliate against perceived threats.
Following the Prime Minister’s remarks, Israel’s Home Front Command announced a significant easing of civil defence restrictions across most parts of the country. The agency said that the current emergency measures would remain in force until 6 a.m. on Tuesday, after which most regions would return to normal activity.
However, some restrictions will continue in northern communities located near the Lebanese border due to ongoing security considerations in that area.
The developments came shortly after Iran’s main military command, Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, announced that Iranian armed forces had halted their military operations against Israel. According to reports carried by Iranian media, the command said the operations had been suspended but warned that any future Israeli military action would provoke a much stronger response.
In a statement, the headquarters cautioned that any further Israeli “aggression” or hostile actions, including operations in southern Lebanon, could trigger what it described as a “severe and crushing” retaliation.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also addressed the situation, emphasising that his country remained committed both to defending its national interests and pursuing diplomatic engagement.
In a message posted on social media platform X, Pezeshkian stated that Iran would continue to safeguard its national security while remaining engaged in diplomatic efforts.
“Our priority is national security and the peace of our people. We will defend the rights of the nation with authority and will not retreat in the face of any threat,” he said.
The Iranian president further remarked that diplomacy and defence were complementary elements of national strength and insisted that Tehran had neither abandoned military preparedness nor the path of negotiations.
Iranian military officials said their recent actions were undertaken in support of Lebanon following Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon and Beirut’s southern suburbs.
The latest statements from both sides suggest a temporary pause in direct hostilities, though tensions remain high and both governments have signalled their readiness to respond swiftly should the fragile calm be disrupted.
