Telangana to Launch ‘Indiramma Jeevitha Bima’ Scheme on June 2, Expands Welfare Push Across State

Hyderabad, May 2026 : The Telangana government will launch the ambitious ‘Indiramma Jeevitha Bima’ (Life Insurance) scheme on June 2, coinciding with Telangana Formation Day, in what officials have described as a landmark step in strengthening the state’s welfare architecture.

Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka on Sunday termed the initiative a “historic scheme” and said it would serve as a special gift to the people of Telangana on the occasion of the state’s formation day.

The new insurance scheme aims to provide life coverage of ₹5 lakh each to nearly 1.15 crore families across the state. The government has emphasised that the scheme will be universal in nature, cutting across caste, religion, and economic background, ensuring that benefits reach every section of society without discrimination.

Describing the broader welfare vision of the government, Vikramarka, who also holds the finance and energy portfolio, said the administration is committed to people-centric governance. He highlighted that multiple welfare initiatives are being implemented simultaneously to uplift marginalised communities and strengthen rural and urban households.

He also underlined the government’s focus on women’s empowerment, stating that special efforts are being made to promote women as entrepreneurs. As part of this initiative, the government will support the establishment of solar power plants and significantly enhance financial assistance for women’s self-help groups. The total allocation for interest-free loans to SHGs has been increased to ₹1 lakh crore, marking one of the largest empowerment drives in the country.

Vikramarka further said that the state is moving ahead with a strong welfare agenda through multiple flagship schemes, including the distribution of fine-quality rice to eligible families, provision of 200 units of free electricity under the ‘Gruha Jyothi’ scheme, and construction of ‘Indiramma’ houses for the poor.

He said these initiatives collectively reflect the government’s commitment to ensuring basic needs and dignity for underprivileged families. “With welfare as our guiding principle and by fulfilling every promise made, we are steering Telangana on the path of progress,” he said in a post on X.

In a major decision taken during the State Cabinet meeting held on Saturday, the government approved the second phase of the ‘Indiramma’ housing scheme. Under this phase, houses will be sanctioned for 2.5 lakh poor families across the state, with an allocation of 2,000 houses per Assembly constituency.

The Cabinet also decided to complete several stalled houses that were initiated during earlier phases but remain unfinished at different stages of construction. These include homes stuck at foundation, wall, or roof-slab levels.

According to the government’s revised funding structure, ₹3 lakh will be provided for houses where foundations are completed but walls and roofing are pending. For houses where walls are already built but roofs remain incomplete, ₹2 lakh will be sanctioned as financial assistance to ensure timely completion.

Revenue and Housing Minister P. Srinivas Reddy said that funds have been allocated for approximately 500 such incomplete houses in each constituency, ensuring that long-pending housing projects are finally completed.

He further informed that mass house-warming ceremonies are scheduled on June 2, during which around 1 lakh ‘Indiramma’ houses constructed in the first phase will be formally handed over to beneficiaries.

With the launch of the life insurance scheme and expansion of housing support, the Telangana government is positioning itself for a major welfare push aimed at strengthening social security and improving living standards across the state.
