CM Stalin Inaugurates 4,978 New Urban Housing Units Worth ₹528 Cr Across Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Thiru M.K. Stalin today (20.05.2025), at the Secretariat, inaugurated 4,978 newly constructed multi-storey residential units built under the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board at a cost of ₹527.84 crore. Additionally, he inaugurated four newly constructed housing colonies built by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board at a cost of ₹207.90 crore via video presentation.

The Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board (TNUHDB), originally established in 1970 by late Chief Minister Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi as the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board, aims to uplift urban poor families by providing not just housing but comprehensive infrastructure, including potable water, sanitation, electricity, roads, schools, healthcare, and waste management.

Under this initiative, housing units were inaugurated across multiple districts including Chennai, Virudhunagar, Thoothukudi, Pudukkottai, Kallakurichi, Tiruppur, Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, Erode, Thiruvallur, and Karur. These projects span various localities such as Mugalivakkam, Thimmapuram, Uchipatti, Kilakkupam, Balakrishnapuram, and Gandhinagar, among others.

Each unit measures around 400 sq. ft. and includes a living room, bedroom, kitchen, and toilet. The housing complexes are equipped with essential amenities like tar roads, drinking water supply, sewage systems, and rainwater harvesting. Residents’ welfare associations have also been established under the “Our Housing, Our Responsibility” initiative.

Since May 2021, TNUHDB has completed and handed over 52,397 multi-storey housing units in 152 project areas, built at an estimated cost of ₹5,946.42 crore, benefiting economically weaker sections and urban slum dwellers.

The Tamil Nadu Housing Board also continues to deliver eco-friendly and affordable housing solutions for middle-income groups and government employees, contributing to sustainable urban development.
