Demonstrators Storm Bangladesh PM’s Residence, Topple Bangabandhu Statue
The situation in Bangladesh has spiraled out of control. Amidst widespread arson and violence, reports indicate that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and fled the country by helicopter. Videos have surfaced showing protesters breaking the statue of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangladesh.
Protesters were seen climbing and dismantling the statue of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in a video from Bangladesh. Defying a nationwide curfew, thousands gathered at the Shahbagh intersection in Dhaka for a long march. Over 100 people died in violent clashes on Sunday, and the unrest continued with fresh violence breaking out on August 5. Protesters, demanding Hasina’s resignation, clashed with supporters of the ruling party, leading to fierce confrontations with the police.
Security forces used tear gas and stun grenades to disperse the violent crowd, resulting in casualties among both protesters and police officers. The demonstrators became so enraged that they stormed the Prime Minister’s residence, setting fire to government properties. In response to the escalating violence, Bangladesh Army Chief General Waqar-Uz-Zaman held a press conference, urging the public to maintain peace. He assured that their demands would be met and announced the formation of an interim government by the army.
The unrest was exacerbated by the recent government ban on Jamaat-e-Islami and its affiliated organizations, following weeks of violent protests. Additionally, ongoing violence over the reservation system in Bangladesh, which reserves 30 percent of government jobs for the families of 1971 freedom fighters, has contributed to the turmoil. Despite a court reduction in the quota, protests have continued, leading to the arrest of more than 11,000 people so far.
