A deeper look at global geopolitics suggests a far more complex picture—one shaped by decades of strategic planning, intelligence operations, and power struggles.

For over 70 years, the United States has indulged in regime change and quite successfully so and this backed by unmatched military strength, advanced technology, and a vast intelligence network. Its strategic think tanks operate with long-term objectives, many of which remain hidden from public view. What may seem like immediate military or political actions often form part of a much broader and calculated end game.

Contrary to popular belief, the US is not solely interested in the oil produced by Gulf nations. Its primary focus lies in controlling the flow of global trade and commerce that passes through the Middle East. In this context, Iran has increasingly been seen as a challenge. Its growing influence and policies have posed a potential threat to the “petrodollar” system, which underpins the US economy and global financial dominance.

At the same time, Iran has also been viewed as a source of ideological and security concerns. Allegations of funding extremist groups and spreading influence beyond its borders have raised alarms in both Europe and North America. This, combined with the rapid rise of China as an economic superpower, has further complicated the global balance of power. One strategic way to slow China’s growth is by targeting its energy supply chains—many of which pass through volatile regions like the Middle East.

Even if regime change in Iran is not immediately achieved, recent developments may have set the country back significantly—possibly by decades. The elimination of key leadership figures and the emergence of alternative power centres could trigger internal instability. Such a situation might lead to factional struggles or even civil unrest in the future, especially if external forces withdraw at a critical stage.

From a strategic standpoint, internal instability in Iran could serve certain global interests. Power vacuums often create opportunities for new leadership to emerge, sometimes influenced by external intelligence agencies. While such possibilities remain speculative, history shows that geopolitical interventions often involve multiple layers of influence and control.

Another dimension of this evolving scenario is the shifting role of alliances like NATO. The US appears to be strategically repositioning itself to have a far lesser role, potentially encouraging European nations to take greater responsibility for their own defence. This could lead to increased military spending across Europe, with countries turning to established suppliers such as the US and Israel for advanced weapon systems—thereby strengthening the American defence industry. This is just pure economics.

Meanwhile, Russia remains entangled in a prolonged conflict, limiting its ability to exert influence elsewhere. This has effectively created a geopolitical stalemate, keeping one major global player occupied while other strategic moves unfold. Side by side, the energy impact on China with the oil outflow being restricted has had an influence in the Chinese manufacturing and markets, thereby in a subtle way slowing down their plan to take over Taiwan. The sheer reach and capability of the US military might may also deter the Chinese from indulging in military confrontation in the Taiwan strait.

There is also a perception among some observers that former US President Donald Trump has been underestimated. While often portrayed as a bully, unconventional, his actions may reflect a transactional approach aimed at securing American interests, even if it appears unpredictable on the surface. The reality is that no country spends billions of dollars on a whim or fancy unless it is backed by a solid plan and an end state that has been envisaged. These plans are always wargamed with multiple options to deal with the outcomes

Additionally, broader cultural and ideological factors may also play a role in shaping global conflicts. Historical institutions like the church, which is seeing the rapid rise and spread of Islam may possibly also have a role in influencing the geopolitical narratives, adding another layer of complexity to international relations. No institution which wielded so much influence for thousands of years across the globe will be a silent spectator to an opposing ideology that can threaten its very existence.

Ultimately, this situation highlights a key reality: global politics is rarely straightforward. National interests, strategic alliances, economic priorities, and ideological influences all intersect in ways that are not always visible. As tensions rise and power dynamics shift, one thing remains clear—no nation or alliance can push its interests indefinitely without encountering resistance.

This perspective reflects the evolving and often unpredictable nature of global power struggles in today’s interconnected world.

(From a Retired Army Officer )

Hyderabad, April 2026 : There have been a plethora of views on the Middle East conflict at play and this adds to one of many.
