New Delhi, April 2026 : Amid rising concerns over the evolving situation in West Asia and disruptions in global energy routes, the government on Saturday reassured citizens about the availability of fuel across the country, while introducing measures to improve access to cooking gas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas announced that 5 kg LPG cylinders are now easily available at local distributors upon showing a valid identity proof, without the need for address verification. The move is aimed at ensuring that migrant workers, temporary residents, and others without local documentation can access essential cooking fuel without difficulty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Officials said the initiative has already seen strong uptake. Since March 23, approximately 5.7 lakh 5 kg cylinders have been sold across the country, with over 71,000 units sold in a single day recently. The simplified process is expected to further ease access, especially in urban and industrial areas with a high migrant population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The government\u2019s statement comes against the backdrop of heightened tensions in West Asia and concerns over the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit route. Despite these developments, authorities have emphasised that there is no shortage of petrol, diesel, or LPG in India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Citizens have been urged not to engage in panic buying, even as reports of long queues at some petrol pumps surfaced due to rumours. The government clarified that all fuel retail outlets are operating normally and that sufficient stocks are available nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To ensure uninterrupted supply, several steps have been taken. Domestic LPG production has been increased, and refineries are operating at high capacity to meet demand. Priority has also been given to essential sectors, including households, hospitals, and critical services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition to boosting supply, the government has introduced demand-side measures to maintain stability. These include extending the LPG booking cycle and promoting the use of alternative energy sources such as piped natural gas (PNG), kerosene, and electric cooking solutions. States have also been advised to expedite the rollout of new PNG connections for both domestic and commercial users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To prevent misuse and ensure fair distribution, enforcement measures have been strengthened. Over 3,700 raids have been conducted to curb hoarding and black marketing, with strict action taken against violators, including suspension of LPG distributorship licences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Officials added that state governments have been empowered under the Essential Commodities Act to take action against irregularities. Regular inspections and public awareness efforts are being carried out to maintain transparency and public confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The government reiterated its commitment to ensuring energy security and maintaining steady fuel supplies despite global uncertainties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
