Hyderabad, April 2026: In a major push to enhance religious tourism and improve pilgrim facilities, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Monday laid the foundation stone for the comprehensive development of the revered Gnana Saraswati Temple. The ambitious project, estimated at \u20b9225 crore, aims to transform the historic temple complex into a modern spiritual destination while preserving its traditional sanctity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Chief Minister, accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and other ministers, performed the Bhoomi Puja in Basara town of Nirmal district. Prior to the ceremony, he, along with his family members, offered prayers and participated in rituals conducted by temple priests, with Vedic chants creating a deeply spiritual atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Located on the banks of the sacred Godavari River, often referred to as the \u201cDakshina Ganga\u201d or Southern Ganges, the temple holds immense religious significance and attracts thousands of devotees every year. Steeped in mythology, it is believed that sage Veda Vyasa resided at Basara after the Kurukshetra War and consecrated the idols of Goddess Saraswati, Mahalakshmi, and Mahakali. This association has made the temple a prominent pilgrimage site, popularly known for the worship of the \u201cTrimataas\u201d or three goddesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of the temple\u2019s unique traditions is the performance of \u201cAksharabhyasam,\u201d a sacred ritual marking a child\u2019s initiation into education. Families from across the country visit Basara to conduct this ceremony, contributing to the temple\u2019s growing footfall over the years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Recognising the surge in pilgrim numbers and the lack of adequate infrastructure, the state government has undertaken a large-scale redevelopment plan. Officials were directed to prepare a master plan that ensures modern amenities while strictly adhering to the temple\u2019s age-old traditions and rituals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The planning process involved consultations with the spiritual heads of Sringeri Sharada Peetham, whose approval was obtained for key architectural and structural changes. The project includes the construction and expansion of vital temple components such as the sanctum sanctorum (Garbhalayam), Artha Mandapam, Raja Gopuram (main tower), additional towers, Mada Veedhulu (processional pathways), a temple tank (Koneru), and a grand northern gateway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A major highlight of the redevelopment is the expansion of the sanctum sanctorum and Artha Mandapam from the existing 2,000 square feet to 5,000 square feet, allowing more devotees to participate in rituals comfortably. The overall built-up area of the temple complex will increase significantly from 20,000 square feet to 62,000 square feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The architectural plan also features a towering nine-storey Raja Gopuram on the northern side, along with seven-storey towers in the remaining three directions. The Mada Veedhulu, designed to be 33 feet wide, will encircle the temple on all sides, facilitating smoother movement during festivals and processions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The redevelopment assumes added importance as the Godavari Pushkaralu is scheduled to be held next year, during which lakhs of devotees are expected to visit Basara for a holy dip in the Godavari River. The government plans to upgrade all essential amenities, including accommodation, sanitation, and crowd management systems, to handle the anticipated influx.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
