KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane explained his decision, citing favourable pitch conditions. He observed that the surface appeared slightly dry with minimal grass cover, making it ideal for batting first. However, KKR were forced to make two changes to their playing XI. Mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy was ruled out due to injury, while all-rounder Sunil Narine missed the match due to illness.
