New Delhi, April 2026 :<\/strong> The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has temporarily relaxed flight duty time limitations (FDTL) for pilots operating long-haul international flights, as airlines grapple with extended flying durations caused by airspace restrictions amid the ongoing Iran conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A senior official from the Ministry of Civil Aviation stated that the decision was taken in response to operational challenges faced by airlines due to the closure of several Middle Eastern airspaces. These restrictions have forced aircraft to take longer alternative routes, significantly increasing flight durations, especially on west-bound international sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Asangba Chuba Ao, explained that the revised norms are aimed at providing immediate relief to airlines while ensuring continuity of operations. He noted that the prolonged detours have made it difficult for airlines to adhere strictly to existing duty time regulations without disruptions to schedules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The DGCA had introduced revised FDTL norms last year to enhance aviation safety by reducing pilot fatigue. These rules mandated stricter limits on flying hours and increased the mandatory rest period for pilots to 48 consecutive hours, up from the earlier 36 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the current geopolitical situation has created exceptional circumstances. With longer flight paths now unavoidable, airlines have struggled to operate within the prescribed limits, prompting the regulator to allow temporary flexibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the revised provisions, for long-haul flights operated with two pilots, the DGCA has extended the permissible flight time by 1 hour and 30 minutes, taking it up to 11 hours and 30 minutes. Additionally, the Flight Duty Period (FDP) has been increased by 1 hour and 45 minutes, allowing pilots to remain on duty for up to 11 hours and 45 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flight time refers to the total duration from the moment an aircraft begins its movement for takeoff until it comes to a complete stop after landing. The extension aims to accommodate the additional time required due to rerouted flight paths while maintaining operational feasibility for airlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The relaxation, which had initially been granted until April 30, is part of a broader effort by the DGCA to balance operational efficiency with safety considerations during this period of disruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the easing of norms, the aviation regulator has intensified its oversight to ensure that safety standards are not compromised. Airlines are now subject to enhanced monitoring, including weekly and fortnightly reviews of critical operations. DGCA officials are also conducting bi-monthly inspections to assess compliance and operational readiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Particular attention is being paid to factors such as crew scheduling integrity, availability of standby personnel, adequacy of operational buffers, and adherence to safety protocols. The regulator has emphasised that while flexibility has been provided, strict compliance with safety requirements remains non-negotiable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move reflects the DGCA\u2019s adaptive approach in responding to global developments, ensuring that airlines can continue operations smoothly while prioritising passenger and crew safety during challenging times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
