As a result of this concerning situation, the pilot was forced to return safely to Nantucket Memorial Airport (ACK), and passengers were kept calm. Cape Air later moved them to another aircraft in order to complete the trip.

The airline has indicated that the aircraft was able to continue operating normally, and no injuries were reported. The aircraft in question has been removed from operational service and will undergo subsequent inspection. The incident is a sharp reminder that even small regional flights can produce dramatic, highly visible safety scares.

The aircraft involved in the incident was a Cessna 402, and the airline said it remained at a stable altitude after the situation occurred. The pilot maintained the jet at low airspeed and continued to operate the plane fairly normally. The pilot quickly returned to Nantucket and landed safely without further incidents. No injuries have been reported. One passenger, Lizbet Fuller, informed the press reporters that the pilot was amazing and kept everyone calm. Passengers were later rebooked onto another aircraft, and Cape Air removed the plane from service for inspection.

Cape Air is a small but important regional commuter airline based in Hyannis, Massachusetts, specializing in short-hop flights that larger carriers are not capable of serving economically. Originally founded in 1989, it has built its business around thin, high-frequency routes linking places like Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, Cape Cod, and Boston. The airline’s operational network, however, is not exclusively limited to New England.

The airline does serve some additional communities in the Northeast (including some smaller, lesser-known places in New England, which we have yet to discuss). The carrier also serves destinations like Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, as well as other small communities in the Northeast and the Caribbean. Unlike major airlines flying large jets, Cape Air mainly uses nine-seat twin-engine turboprop aircraft, including the long-serving Cessna 402 and newer Tecnam P2012 Traveller models.

The Cessna 402, the plane involved in this incident, is a small, unpressurized, twin-engine piston aircraft built by Cessna for short-haul commuter flying, charter work, and light cargo missions. Manufactured from the late 1960s through 1985, the plane was designed less for luxury or high speed than for practicality. Low operating costs, a decent payload, and the ability to carry a handful of passengers on short regional sectors are all key pieces of the plane’s profile.

In airline service, it is most commonly configured for 09 passengers, a key reason why it became such a staple of Cape Air’s network linking small communities like Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, and Boston. The airline also has an extensive maintenance network to support this aircraft. Compared with a regional jet, the 402 is far smaller, noisier (from a passenger perspective), and more operationally basic, but this is what allows it to economically serve routes that would never support larger aircraft. That makes it one of the classic “air taxi” aircraft you will see in American skies today.

Team Maverick.

Nantucket, USA; April 2026: A Cape Air flight from Nantucket to Boston turned back after the upper portion of the plane’s main cabin door, opened shortly after departure over Nantucket Sound at around 03:00 Hours (IST) today morning (17:30 Hours EDT on 07th April).
