Governor Sardar Taranjit Singh Sandhu and Hon’ble Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta today visited Vasudev Ghat, located opposite ISBT, and Yamuna Bazar Ghat, situated opposite Hanuman Mandir. During the visit, a detailed review was undertaken of sanitation arrangements, infrastructure development, and ongoing works related to Yamuna rejuvenation. Necessary directions were issued to the concerned officials. The primary objective of the visit was to assess the progress of Yamuna riverfront development and review departmental preparedness for the upcoming monsoon and summer challenges.

After inspecting both locations, the Lt. Governor and the Chief Minister highlighted the stark contrast between Vasudev Ghat, developed by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), and Yamuna Bazar Ghat. They noted that developed sites such as Vasudev Ghat, Asita, Baansera, and Yamuna Biodiversity Park have emerged as eco-friendly, sustainable, and green public spaces. However, several other ghats still need to be developed along similar lines in coordination with relevant departments and agencies.

During the inspection, the Lt. Governor and the Chief Minister reviewed the development of ghats along the Yamuna, green zones, walking trails, biodiversity areas, and the deployment of modern machinery for cleaning operations. Progress of greenway development, kutcha walking and cycling tracks, plantation along the riverbanks, wetland restoration, and conservation of natural water channels was also assessed.

Officials also presented a detailed overview of floodplain restoration projects, highlighting phased development work from Wazirabad to Okhla. Information was shared regarding ecological rejuvenation of riverbanks, biodiversity enhancement, and measures to reduce pollution.

Pathway to Solutions through Public Engagement

The Lt. Governor stated that the inspection was a result of extensive public interactions held over the past month. Citizens had raised key concerns such as Yamuna pollution, air pollution, monsoon flooding, and water scarcity during summers.

He emphasized that governance must remain citizen-centric and responsive. Based on public feedback, efforts are underway to rejuvenate the entire floodplain stretch from Palla to Kalindi Kunj in a time-bound manner.

Following the inspection, directions were issued to all concerned departments—including Irrigation & Flood Control Department (I&FCD), Delhi Jal Board (DJB), Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), and Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD)to work in close coordination. Departments have also been asked to prepare a comprehensive presentation with clearly defined targets and implementation timelines. The Lt. Governor reiterated that Yamuna rejuvenation and tackling air pollution are “non-negotiable priorities” and must be pursued in mission mode.

Global Expertise and Central Support

The Lt. Governor said that Yamuna rejuvenation is now among the top priorities of the Hon’ble Prime Minister and the Hon’ble Home Minister. The government will actively collaborate with national and international experts to adopt global best practices and innovative solutions for these critical projects.

Yamuna Cleanliness: Top Priority of Delhi Government

On the occasion, the Chief Minister stated that the Delhi Government has been committed to the cleanliness and rejuvenation of the Yamuna since day one and continues to make sustained efforts in this direction. She reiterated that the vision is to build a clean, beautiful, and green Delhi, with restoration of the Yamuna as a key priority.

Referring to the 2026–27 budget, the Chief Minister stated that the Delhi Government’s ₹22,236 crore ‘Green Budget’ constitutes approximately 21.44% of the total budget, with a significant portion directly allocated to environmental initiatives, particularly Yamuna cleaning. She emphasized that Yamuna cleanliness is not merely a project but a firm commitment of the government. Accordingly, the largest share of the Green Budget has been allocated to the Delhi Jal Board to ensure that sewage treatment and desilting works face no financial constraints.

The Chief Minister also directed officials to immediately remove encroachments from floodplains to enhance the river’s water holding capacity. She further instructed implementation of a three-pronged agenda focusing on desilting, ensuring smooth water flow, and providing permanent solutions for waterlogging hotspots. Additionally, emphasis was laid on developing Yamuna riverbanks into permanent and grand public assets, instead of incurring recurring expenditure on temporary ghats.

She further stated that Yamuna rejuvenation is a long-term and continuous process requiring sustained efforts, public participation, and effective management to prevent recurring issues such as waterlogging and to establish a clean and resilient river system for the capital.

Focus on Infrastructure and Ecology

During the inspection, ongoing floodplain restoration works from Wazirabad to Okhla were reviewed. Officials were directed to:

Accelerate greenway development, wetland conservation, and biodiversity park creation along the Yamuna

Develop kutcha walking and cycling tracks in a manner that preserves the river’s natural character

Integrate ghats into a ‘continuous stretch’ rather than developing them in isolated segments

Strict Monitoring and Timely Execution

At the conclusion of the inspection, officials were directed to adopt a zero-tolerance policy towards solid waste mismanagement, sewage discharge, and illegal dumping.

The Lt. Governor and the Chief Minister jointly emphasized that the areas being developed along the Yamuna must be environmentally sustainable and eco-friendly, so that they not only enrich nature but also emerge as attractive public spaces for citizens.

Delhi Government’s major commitment to Yamuna cleanliness: Largest share of ‘Green Budget’ allocated for Yamuna cleaning Directions issued to officials to strengthen overall development of Yamuna riverbanks, sanitation systems, and infrastructure Special emphasis on floodplain restoration, greenway development, wetland conservation, and enhancement of biodiversity Rejuvenation of Yamuna and addressing air pollution, water scarcity, and flooding …

[142
143
["post-113923","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-state","tag-state
["GET
