Election officials expressed confidence that the final turnout would climb even higher, as voters standing in queues at closing time were allowed to cast their ballots.

Voting began at 7 a.m. across all constituencies and proceeded in a smooth and orderly manner throughout the day. Enthusiastic participation was reported not only in Puducherry but also in its outlying regions of Karaikal, Mahe, and Yanam. Long queues outside polling booths from early morning highlighted strong public engagement in what is widely seen as a crucial election.

A total of approximately 9.5 lakh voters were eligible to vote, including 5.03 lakh women and 4.46 lakh men, with women voters outnumbering their male counterparts. The electorate was spread across 23 constituencies in Puducherry, five in Karaikal, and one each in Mahe and Yanam.

Authorities had established 1,099 polling stations, of which 209 were identified as vulnerable, prompting enhanced security arrangements. The presence of security personnel and election observers ensured that polling remained peaceful and free from major disruptions.

The election witnessed a multi-cornered contest, though the primary battle remained between the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the All India N.R. Congress, and the opposition INDIA bloc comprising the Indian National Congress, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi.

Adding a new dimension to the contest was the participation of actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, which generated considerable interest among voters. Meanwhile, Seeman’s Naam Tamilar Katchi also fielded candidates in a bid to expand its regional footprint.

Polling officially ended at 6 p.m., with officials ensuring that all voters present at polling stations before closing time were able to vote through a token system.

The turnout significantly exceeded the 82.2 per cent recorded in the 2021 Assembly elections, signalling heightened political awareness and mobilisation. With such robust participation and a tightly contested field, the Puducherry Assembly election is now set to deliver a decisive mandate that will shape the Union Territory’s political future.

Puducherry, April 2026 : Polling for the 30-member Puducherry Assembly concluded on Thursday amid tight security, recording a historic voter turnout that reflected the intensity of the electoral contest in the Union Territory.
