Mumbai, April 2026 : Cultural Affairs Minister Adv. Ashish Shelar announced that administrative approval has been granted to produce an international-standard documentary on the petroglyphs (rock carvings) found in the Ratnagiri region of the Konkan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ambitious project will be undertaken by the Maharashtra government\u2019s Tourism and Cultural Affairs Department, with an approved budget of approximately Rs 14.50 crore. Along the 300-km-long coastline of Ratnagiri, more than 2,000 petroglyphs have been discovered within a 25-km stretch. These ancient rock carvings provide invaluable insights into prehistoric human life, culture, and traditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Minister Shelar said the initiative aims to document the historical, cultural, and scientific significance of these petroglyphs at a global level, helping bring international recognition to this unique heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Funds have been allocated for appointing a director and assistant directors, conducting surveys, procuring advanced equipment, and arranging transport and accommodation. The project will also include studio-based work such as editing, sound design, and visual effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Special emphasis will be placed on drone footage, cinematic shots, high-quality photography, and the creation of behind-the-scenes (BTS) content to ensure world-class production standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition, the visual material generated through the project will be used to create dedicated content for social media platforms. An AV content bank showcasing the richness and diversity of the petroglyphs will also be developed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The minister further stated that internationally reputed directors will be selected for the project, and agreements will be executed as per government norms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The documentary will capture the petroglyphs across different seasons, lighting conditions, and their connection with local life and traditions. It will be produced in accordance with UNESCO guidelines, ensuring global relevance and quality standards. The Directorate of Archaeology and Museums has been entrusted with executing the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Minister Shelar expressed confidence that the initiative will help bring global attention to the Konkan\u2019s petroglyphs and significantly boost tourism in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
