Compared to the past two years, water availability has improved considerably, reflecting better rainfall, efficient water management, and effective reservoir operations.

At present, the state’s 46 major irrigation reservoirs — comprising 12 major and 34 medium projects — have an average water storage of 67.43 per cent. This marks a notable increase from 45.23 per cent during the same period in 2025 and 42 per cent in 2024.

Among the 12 major irrigation projects, the current water storage stands at 68.19 per cent, compared to 45.84 per cent in 2025 and 38.62 per cent in 2024. Key reservoirs include Maniyari (90.41%), Murumsilli (86.85%), Kharang (84.99%), Dudhawa (84.54%), Ravishankar Sagar (76.72%), Sondhur (70.65%), and Tandula (66.19%). Minimata Bango reservoir currently holds 63.86 per cent water, while Kelo has 51.83 per cent. Kodar reservoir has relatively lower storage at 35.45 per cent.

Similarly, the 34 medium irrigation projects have an average storage of 63.38 per cent, higher than 44.62 per cent in 2025 and 45.38 per cent in 2024. Among these, Chirpani (92.23%), Khapri (92.98%), Pipariya Nala (89.69%), Gondli (85.53%), Sutiyapat (79.82%), Saroda (77.57%), and Kosarteda (77.46%) are operating at high storage levels.

To ensure optimal use of available water for agricultural needs, controlled and phased water release is being carried out from various irrigation projects. Water from Ravishankar Sagar (Gangrel) is being supplied through canals to Dhamtari and Raipur regions for irrigation and domestic use. Similarly, water is being released from Dudhawa and Sondhur reservoirs through canal networks. From Kodar reservoir, approximately 6.84 cumecs of water is being discharged through canals. The Paralkot project is also distributing water via its right and left bank canals.

Medium irrigation projects such as Kharkhara, Gondli, Pipariya, Saroda, Jumka, and Kedar Nala are also releasing water as required through canals and sluice gates. This is ensuring adequate supply for the final irrigation of rabi crops as well as for summer crops and other needs.

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai stated that the state government is prioritizing farmers’ interests by ensuring scientific and efficient management of water resources. He emphasized that the improved reservoir levels are the result of coordinated efforts and reiterated the government’s goal of providing timely and adequate irrigation water to boost agricultural production and enhance farmers’ incomes.

Raipur, April 2026: The water storage situation in irrigation reservoirs across Chhattisgarh has shown significant improvement this year, with current levels exceeding 67 per cent.
