However, he cautioned that the influx also brings potential challenges, making it essential to handle tourism growth with care and responsibility.

He highlighted that since the Sairang railway line became operational on September 13, 2025, the state has been witnessing over a thousand tourists monthly from October onwards. In 2025 alone, Mizoram recorded over 80,000 visitors, and the number is expected to increase further this year. Emphasising the need to preserve local culture and traditions, he said that tourists must be received in a way that does not disrupt the social fabric, and awareness initiatives are necessary to ensure responsible tourism. He expressed the government’s willingness to work closely with the YMA in this regard.

The Minister further stated that if developed properly, tourism could become one of the largest industries in Mizoram. He stressed that since tourism impacts society as a whole, collective efforts are required in managing it. He also mentioned that discussions on the subject have already been held with leaders of the Council of Churches in Mizoram and the PCI Mizoram Synod, and similar engagements with other NGOs and community organisations will continue.

Central YMA President Pu R. Lalngheta said that while the organisation wants visitors to enjoy a pleasant and memorable stay in Mizoram, there is also a need to ensure that tourism does not inconvenience local residents or disrupt normal life. He suggested the preparation of clear “dos and don’ts” guidelines for tourists, outlining expected behaviour and cultural sensitivities.

During the meeting, both sides discussed various ways to jointly conduct awareness campaigns. It was noted that the government has been preparing and distributing informational materials for tourists, including guidelines and essential information related to tourism activities. The government also assured that it remains open to incorporating suggestions from the YMA.

Officials highlighted ongoing initiatives such as tour guide training programmes aimed at enhancing visitors’ experience and promoting the value of various tourist sites across the state. Discussions were also held on issues related to homestay regulations, and the implementation of Inner Line Permit (ILP) and Protected Area Permit (PAP) systems from a tourism perspective.

The possibility of establishing contact points through YMA branches to assist tourists facing difficulties was also explored. Both sides agreed on the importance of strengthening coordination for the overall development of tourism in the state.

Representatives of the Central YMA expressed their willingness to collaborate actively with the government for the progress of the state and its people. They also indicated that the idea of formalising this cooperation through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) would be considered.

The meeting was attended by Commissioner & Secretary of Tourism Pu Vanlaldina Fanai, Director Pi R. Lalrodingi, and other departmental officials. From the Central YMA, President Pu R. Lalngheta, Assistant Secretary Pu S.F. David Ngursangzuala, Financial Secretary Pu M.S. Ralte, and other members were present.

Aizawl, April 2026: A meeting was held on Friday at 1:00 PM between Minister of State for Tourism Pu Lalnghinglova Hmar, officials of the Tourism Department, and leaders of the Central Young Mizo Association (CYMA) to discuss collaborative strategies for managing the increasing number of tourists visiting Mizoram and promoting awareness-driven tourism practices.
