Tehran; April 2026<\/strong>: Zohreh Kharazmi, associate professor at the University of Tehran, says Iranian forces will fight back against any US naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. \u201cThis is not the first time\u201d, she said, pointing to 1953, when the UK responded to the nationalisation of Iranian oil by Mohammed Mossadegh, Iran\u2019s democratically elected Prime Minister, similarly. He was subsequently overthrown in a CIA and MI6-backed coup. \u201cThis kind of imperial show of power, trying to dictate to others, is something very familiar to Iranians\u201d, Kharazmi said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iran\u2019s control over the strait, she added, carried a deeper significance. Similar to Egypt\u2019s decision to nationalise the Suez Canal in 1956 to break the UK and France\u2019s control over the waterway, Iran\u2019s assertion of control over Hormuz \u201cgives a sense of honour that Iran has made a sovereign decision over its own territorial waters\u201d, she said. Kharazmi noted that Iranians have fought against the US military in the air and on the ground. \u201cThe naval dimension is no exception\u201d, she said, adding that reaching naval vessels may be easier than targeting an F-35. Kharazmi also raised the possibility of Chinese intervention, saying Beijing \u201cmay choose to escort its ships\u201d, which \u201cwould put the United States and China in direct confrontation\u201d. Iran has also threatened to close the Bab el-Mandeb Strait to the Red Sea off the coast of Yemen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf this blockade becomes a contest between the resilience of the Islamic Republic and the resilience of global markets, it will not take long to see who is losing\u201d, she said. \u201cTechnically, they cannot control the situation. With Hollywood-style strategies, they cannot prevail in this battleground\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the otherside, Democratic Senator Patty Murray have said that Trump\u2019s \u2018costly foreign war\u2019 driving inflation that he had promised to reverse. In a post on X, Murray said one of the major factors causing \u201csurging\u201d inflation in the US is \u201cTrump starting a costly foreign war that no one asked for. He promised to lower inflation, to lower prices; he not only broke those promises, he\u2019s actively doing the OPPOSITE\u201d wrote Murray. She has further lambasted at the Donald Trump\u2019s regime:<\/p>\n\n\n
