Kathmandu, April 2026 : Nepal\u2019s newly appointed Prime Minister Balendra Shah has publicly disclosed his personal assets, revealing bank savings of NPR 14.6 million. The declaration, released on Sunday, was made alongside similar disclosures by members of his Cabinet, reflecting a continued emphasis on transparency in governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Under Nepal\u2019s Corruption Prevention Act, 2002, ministers and senior government officials are required to submit their property details to designated authorities within 60 days of assuming office. While the law mandates submission, it does not require these details to be made public. However, successive governments have often chosen voluntary disclosure as part of good governance practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to information published by the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Balendra Shah has identified digital platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, and Spotify as his primary sources of income. His declaration also includes details of family-owned assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His mother, Dhruvadevi Shah, owns 5 aana (approximately 158.98 square metres) of land in Kathmandu and 1.2 bigha (around 8,286.14 square metres) in Dhanusha district in the southern Madhes Province. His father, Ramnarayan Shah, possesses 9 bigha (over 61,000 square metres) of land in Mahottari district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition, Shah\u2019s wife, Sabina Kafle, has declared ownership of 190 tolas of precious metals, including gold and silver, though specific breakdowns were not provided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Other senior members of the Cabinet, including Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle and Home Minister Sudhan Gurung, have also submitted and disclosed their asset details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nepal has largely maintained a tradition of public asset disclosure by top leaders since the restoration of democracy in 1990. However, this practice has not always been consistent. For instance, Cabinet members under former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli in 2024 did not make their property details public.
