They are not expecting this conflict to turn itself around any time soon, or even if it does, that there will be guaranteed oil and gas shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

South Korea, for example, has been sourcing helium critical for its semiconductor production from the United States at a much higher cost. It is also looking for oil and gas elsewhere, holding talks with the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Oman to source energy that does not pass through the strait. It has recently sent five tankers to the Gulf to try and source more energy that way. South Korea is also running its nuclear power plants at full capacity and has put in place a large framework for renewable energy.

Governments are treating this as a problem that could recur or have long-lasting repercussions. The markets are reflecting both Trump’s behaviour and the longer-term strategic shifts underway in the region.

Meanwhile, Jennifer Parker, a specialist in maritime law and security at the University of New South Wales (NSW), says naval blockades can be a lawful method of warfare, but only under certain conditions.

First: It can’t adversely impact neutral states. So, they couldn’t blockade the Strait of Hormuz, for example, because that would impact the states inside of the Persian Gulf.

Second: You need to allow food through, and you can’t adversely impact the civilian population. You can’t starve out the civilian population, she said.

Third: It needs to be impartial. So, you’ll note that when CENTCOM have announced this blockade, different to President Trump’s comments, they have said it will apply to any ship of any flag going in and out of Iran, and that’s important. It has to be impartial for it to be a lawful blockade.

Parker, who is a former naval officer, said the US will likely “intercept” vessels of all nations going to and from Iranian ports in a bid to apply economic pressure. She also noted reports in US media of China seeking to resupply Iran with military equipment and said the blockade would seek to stop such moves. The US is trying to isolate Iran from any military resupplies and put economic pressure on Iran by intercepting oil flows.

This is quite an escalation after the US walked away from those peace talks in Islamabad with essentially no deal on any of its demands. And now Trump at first said that this US naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz would impact all ships coming and going from the strait.

Well, the CENTCOM has issued a narrowing order, rather saying that it is only ships that will be leaving or coming to ports in Iran. Also, missing from the CENTCOM’s statement is any mention of the tolls that the US President had mentioned earlier. He said that any international vessel that paid Iran a toll to travel through the strait would be pursued by the US Navy and would not be granted safe passage.

That is, in contrast to the CENTCOM statement that said that there will be freedom of navigation for any vessels that bypass these Iranian ports.

So still a lot of confusion there as far as what these orders are, but CENTCOM is saying that this blockade on ships coming and going from Iranian ports, will begin today (13th April 2026) at 14:00 GMT (19:30 IST).

Suvro Sanyal – Team Maverick.

April 2026: Markets in Asia are also factoring in that governments across the region are now taking a longer-term approach to energy security.
