Washington, April 2026 : Republican leader Nikki Haley has strongly defended the United States\u2019 decision to walk away from nuclear negotiations with Iran, endorsing President Donald Trump\u2019s plan to impose a maritime blockade and warning that Tehran is attempting to \u201chold the global economy hostage\u201d through its control of key shipping routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In an interview with CNN, Haley said the talks between Washington and Tehran were fundamentally flawed from the outset, with both sides far apart on critical issues. She noted that the US had proposed a comprehensive 15-point plan, while Iran presented a separate 10-point framework, with little overlap between the two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe Iranians were not willing to give up their nuclear production or their grip over the Strait,\u201d Haley said, referring to the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. She backed Vice President J D Vance\u2019s decision to discontinue negotiations, arguing that continued dialogue under such conditions would have been unproductive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Haley described the blockade as part of a broader economic pressure campaign aimed at weakening Iran. According to her, targeting Tehran\u2019s economic lifelines is the most effective way to compel compliance. \u201cTo really bring Iran to its knees, you have to go after it economically,\u201d she said, emphasising the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open for global trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She warned that Iran is leveraging its geographic position to exert pressure on the US and its Gulf allies, calling the standoff a \u201cgame of chicken.\u201d Haley highlighted the global implications, noting that roughly 20 per cent of the world\u2019s oil and liquefied natural gas supplies pass through the strait, along with a significant share of fertiliser shipments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pointing to disruptions already taking place, she said maritime traffic had slowed dramatically. \u201cTypically, around 135 ships pass through daily. Now it\u2019s just a handful, with hundreds of vessels backed up,\u201d she claimed, underlining the growing strain on global supply chains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite her support for a hardline stance, Haley said the objective was not to prolong conflict. \u201cWe don\u2019t want an endless war. This needs to be resolved quickly,\u201d she stated, adding that US naval forces are already positioned to secure safe passage through the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the nuclear issue, Haley stressed that any resolution must include the complete removal of enriched uranium from Iran. She reiterated that preventing Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons remains a top priority not just for Washington but also for its regional allies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Haley also suggested that a limited, targeted military operation might ultimately be required to neutralise Iran\u2019s capabilities. She described such an operation as potentially brief but complex and risky, involving specialised forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition, she accused China and Russia of supporting Iran\u2019s military ambitions, including supplying advanced weaponry. She questioned whether a planned summit between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping should proceed, urging a tougher stance unless Beijing halts its assistance to Tehran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While acknowledging past political differences with Trump, Haley said the President is currently handling global adversaries with strength, though she admitted his approach can sometimes create uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She also raised concerns about domestic challenges in the US, highlighting the rising national debt and economic pressures as key issues that require urgent attention alongside foreign policy priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
