Chennai, April 2026 : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin on Tuesday issued a sharp warning to the Union government, cautioning that the state would launch a massive agitation if the proposed delimitation exercise leads to a reduction in its parliamentary representation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a strongly worded video message posted on X, Stalin directly addressed Prime Minister Narendra Modi, questioning the rationale behind the proposed exercise. He argued that states like Tamil Nadu, which have effectively implemented population control measures, should not be penalised through reduced representation in Parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIs delimitation a punishment for Tamil Nadu, which succeeded in population control?\u201d Stalin asked, expressing concern that the move could weaken the political voice of southern states. He described the proposed exercise as an \u201cinjustice at the doorstep\u201d and made it clear that the state would resist any such attempt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Chief Minister accused the Centre of moving forward with the delimitation process without adequate consultation with states, calling it a unilateral decision that undermines the spirit of federalism. He emphasised that Tamil Nadu would not remain a silent spectator if its representation is curtailed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIf the Union government proceeds with this exercise, Tamil Nadu will undertake a massive protest,\u201d he warned, signalling a possible escalation in Centre-State tensions. Stalin further stressed that the issue is not merely political but deeply tied to the state\u2019s identity and self-respect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cFor us, elections and governance are secondary \u2014 policy and self-respect come first,\u201d he asserted, underlining the emotional and ideological significance of the matter for the state and its people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Stalin also raised concerns about reports suggesting that Parliament may be convened in a special session to advance the delimitation process. He hinted at a lack of transparency, suggesting that such a session could be called in an unusual manner without adequate discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He warned that if any decision affecting Tamil Nadu\u2019s representation is pushed through Parliament, the state would respond with full-scale protests. The Chief Minister reiterated that the Centre has not sought the views of states like Tamil Nadu before initiating discussions on such a critical constitutional exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a more forceful tone, Stalin cautioned that the Union government would witness \u201ca Tamil Nadu it has never seen before\u201d if the delimitation proposal is imposed.
