New Delhi, April 2026: In a significant legal development, a Delhi court on Wednesday issued summons to businessman Robert Vadra and eight others after taking cognisance of a prosecution complaint filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case linked to a 2008 land transaction in Gurugram\u2019s Shikohpur village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Special Court at Rouse Avenue directed Vadra and the other accused to appear before it on May 16. Vadra, who is married to Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and is the son-in-law of former Congress President Sonia Gandhi, now faces fresh scrutiny as the case moves forward under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The court had earlier, on April 4, reserved its order on whether to take cognisance of the ED\u2019s prosecution complaint after hearing detailed arguments from both the agency and the defence. During the proceedings, Vadra\u2019s legal counsel contended that no offence of money laundering was made out and urged the court to dismiss the complaint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, after reviewing the submissions, the court decided to proceed with the matter, marking a setback for the businessman. The ED has accused Vadra of generating proceeds of crime through an allegedly fraudulent land transaction involving approximately 3.53 acres in Shikohpur village, located in Haryana\u2019s Gurugram district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the agency, the transaction was executed through Vadra\u2019s company, Skylight Hospitality Private Limited, which acquired the land in February 2008 for Rs 7.50 crore from Omkareshwar Properties Private Limited. The ED alleges that despite the transaction, no actual payment was made, and that the sale deed contained false declarations, including references to a cheque that was never issued or encashed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The probe agency has further claimed that the land was deliberately undervalued in the sale documentation, resulting in evasion of stamp duty and constituting an offence under Section 423 of the Indian Penal Code. It has also alleged that the proceeds generated from this deal were subsequently routed through multiple companies allegedly controlled by Vadra, thereby forming a complex web of financial transactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As part of its investigation, the ED has identified approximately Rs 58 crore as proceeds of crime. It has provisionally attached 43 immovable properties valued at Rs 38.69 crore, which it claims are either directly linked to or represent the value equivalent of the alleged proceeds. These properties are reportedly held by Vadra, his proprietary firm Artex, Skylight Hospitality Private Limited, and other associated entities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The agency has sought the maximum punishment under Section 4 of the PMLA, which includes up to seven years of rigorous imprisonment, along with confiscation of the attached assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The court had earlier issued notices to Vadra and the other accused under Section 223(1) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), ensuring they were given an opportunity to be heard before cognisance was taken. The order, passed by Special Judge Sushant Changotra, stated that all proposed accused persons must be heard before proceeding further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The origins of the case date back to October 2012, when senior IAS officer Ashok Khemka cancelled the Shikohpur land deal, citing procedural irregularities. Although a subsequent internal government panel later gave a clean chit to Vadra and real estate major DLF Limited, the matter resurfaced after the BJP came to power in Haryana, leading to the registration of an FIR by the state police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
