He urged all parties to respect the ceasefire fully and adhere to international law, stressing the importance of preventing further escalation.

Echoing this sentiment earlier, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric highlighted the severe humanitarian toll of the conflict. He noted that civilians in Lebanon have endured immense suffering, while residents in northern Israel also deserve to live in peace and security. The United Nations, he said, hopes that all sides will honour the ceasefire and avoid actions that could derail the fragile truce.

The UN also reiterated its readiness to support peace efforts through its political and peacekeeping missions. Dujarric underscored the importance of fully implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which calls for a cessation of hostilities and lays the groundwork for a permanent ceasefire. He emphasized that there is no military solution to the conflict and that diplomacy remains the only viable path forward.

The ceasefire was announced earlier by US President Donald Trump following discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun. The agreement provides for a 10-day halt in hostilities, beginning at 5 p.m. Washington time, in an effort to cool tensions along a front closely linked to the broader Iran conflict.

The recent escalation was triggered when Israel intensified operations against Hezbollah, which controls significant parts of southern Lebanon and has carried out repeated cross-border attacks. Although Lebanon is not formally at war with Israel, it has borne the brunt of retaliatory strikes due to Hezbollah’s activities.

The durability of the ceasefire remains uncertain, largely depending on whether Hezbollah refrains from further attacks and whether both sides exercise restraint. While the group is not officially part of the agreement, reports suggest it may comply if Israel does the same.

Support for the ceasefire has also come from Iran, with Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf endorsing the move and stressing its importance for regional stability.

The truce follows a rare diplomatic engagement between Israeli and Lebanese representatives in Washington, facilitated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

While the ceasefire offers a crucial pause in violence, the United Nations has made it clear that sustained dialogue and adherence to international commitments will be essential to achieving lasting peace in the region.

United Nations, April 2026 : UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday welcomed the announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, expressing hope that the development would open the door to a long-term and sustainable peace in the region.
