United Nations, April 2026 : UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday welcomed the announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, expressing hope that the development would open the door to a long-term and sustainable peace in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a message shared on social media, Guterres commended the role of the United States in facilitating the agreement and said the truce could pave the way for meaningful negotiations. He urged all parties to respect the ceasefire fully and adhere to international law, stressing the importance of preventing further escalation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Echoing this sentiment earlier, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric highlighted the severe humanitarian toll of the conflict. He noted that civilians in Lebanon have endured immense suffering, while residents in northern Israel also deserve to live in peace and security. The United Nations, he said, hopes that all sides will honour the ceasefire and avoid actions that could derail the fragile truce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The UN also reiterated its readiness to support peace efforts through its political and peacekeeping missions. Dujarric underscored the importance of fully implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which calls for a cessation of hostilities and lays the groundwork for a permanent ceasefire. He emphasized that there is no military solution to the conflict and that diplomacy remains the only viable path forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ceasefire was announced earlier by US President Donald Trump following discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun. The agreement provides for a 10-day halt in hostilities, beginning at 5 p.m. Washington time, in an effort to cool tensions along a front closely linked to the broader Iran conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The recent escalation was triggered when Israel intensified operations against Hezbollah, which controls significant parts of southern Lebanon and has carried out repeated cross-border attacks.
