However, he alleged that Opposition parties have attempted to stall progress by raising doubts and introducing conditional arguments. “Each and every lawmaker has supported the Bill in principle, but the INDIA bloc has opposed it through ‘ifs and buts’ and by questioning the method of implementation,” he said.

The Home Minister further argued that the Opposition’s concerns appear to be procedural on the surface but are, in reality, rooted in resistance to the concept of women’s reservation itself. He maintained that the government remains committed to ensuring greater representation for women in legislative bodies.

Outlining the roadmap ahead, Shah said the Centre aims to implement the reservation framework in time for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. He emphasized that the principle of “one nation, one vote” is central to the democratic process and forms a key part of the government’s broader vision for electoral reforms.

Addressing concerns related to delimitation, Shah strongly criticized those opposing the expansion of constituencies. He argued that such resistance ultimately harms underrepresented groups, including backward classes and Dalits, by limiting their opportunities for greater political participation.

Explaining the rationale behind the proposed delimitation exercise, Shah noted that many Lok Sabha constituencies have grown disproportionately large due to population increases. In some cases, constituencies now have as many as 40 lakh voters, making it increasingly difficult for Members of Parliament to effectively address local issues. He added that more than 120 constituencies currently have electorates exceeding 20 lakh voters, highlighting the need for restructuring.

The Home Minister also took aim at previous Congress governments, accusing them of freezing the delimitation process for political reasons. He pointed out that while the number of Lok Sabha seats was increased from 525 to 543 in 1971, a freeze was imposed in 1976 due to concerns over potential political losses. He dismissed Opposition claims that the current delimitation exercise is designed to benefit the ruling party, particularly in northern states.

Clarifying the timeline, Shah said the national Census is expected to be completed by 2027, after which delimitation can be carried out. Given this sequence, he stated that implementing the Women’s Reservation Bill by 2029 is both practical and timely.

Reaffirming the government’s stance, Shah called for constructive cooperation to ensure the Bill’s smooth passage and effective implementation.

New Delhi, April 2026 : Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday asserted that there is broad consensus across Parliament in support of the Women’s Reservation Bill, while accusing Opposition parties in the INDIA bloc of creating unnecessary hurdles by questioning its implementation framework.
