The move is aimed at promoting the adoption of electric vehicles by ensuring convenient and accessible charging facilities for urban residents.

Special Chief Secretary (Energy) Navin Mittal said that the Energy Department is currently drafting the policy, which will focus on integrating EV charging infrastructure into residential buildings. He shared this update during a high-level review meeting held at the Secretariat on Friday.

The meeting, convened by Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao, brought together senior officials from multiple departments to discuss strategies for scaling up EV infrastructure across the state. The discussions centred on creating a robust ecosystem that supports the growing demand for electric mobility.

Highlighting the urgency of the initiative, the Chief Secretary stressed the need to accelerate EV adoption in line with environmental sustainability goals and the transition to clean energy. He pointed out that a well-developed and widely accessible charging network is essential to build confidence among EV users and encourage more people to shift away from conventional fuel-based vehicles.

To achieve this, he directed officials to prepare a comprehensive and future-ready plan for expanding EV charging infrastructure. The plan is expected to leverage both government initiatives and private sector participation, ensuring that the rollout is efficient and scalable.

Emphasising coordination among departments, Rao called for the development of a seamless and reliable charging ecosystem that caters to both urban and rural areas. He noted that accessibility, efficiency, and reliability must be key priorities to ensure the long-term success of the initiative.

In addition, the Chief Secretary instructed the creation of a centralised, real-time dashboard to map and monitor EV charging stations across Telangana. This digital platform will help authorities track progress, identify gaps, and ensure transparency in the implementation process.

Senior officials, including Transport, Roads and Buildings Special Chief Secretary Vikas Raj, Planning Secretary Gaurav Uppal, TGRTC Managing Director Nagireddy, Transport Commissioner Ilambarithi, TGIIC Vice Chairman and Managing Director Shashanka, GHMC Commissioner Karnan, TGREDCO Managing Director Anila Vavilla, and representatives from automobile manufacturers, participated in the meeting.

The proposed policy marks a key step in Telangana’s efforts to build a cleaner, greener transportation future.

Hyderabad, April 2026 : In a significant push towards sustainable mobility, the Telangana government is working on a policy to make it mandatory for apartment complexes to install Electric Vehicle (EV) charging points in their basements.
