Tehran, April 2026 : Iran has firmly rejected any possibility of transferring its enriched uranium abroad, with Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei stating that sending nuclear material to the United States has \u201cnever been under consideration.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking on state-run IRIB television, Baghaei clarified that recent remarks by Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi should not be interpreted as a shift in diplomatic posture. He emphasised that Araghchi\u2019s statements were made strictly within the framework of the ceasefire agreement between Iran and the United States announced on April 8, and did not signal any new negotiations or concessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Earlier, Araghchi had announced that the Strait of Hormuz would remain fully open to commercial shipping for the duration of the current truce. However, Baghaei underscored that this move was a continuation of existing arrangements rather than a fresh agreement. \u201cWe have reached no new agreement. The ceasefire agreement is the one announced on April 8,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He further explained that following the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, Tehran decided to extend safe-passage provisions\u2014originally part of its understanding with Washington\u2014to vessels navigating the strait. At the same time, Baghaei accused the United States of failing to uphold its commitments under the ceasefire, particularly regarding provisions that Iran claims were meant to include Lebanon. Both Washington and Jerusalem have rejected this interpretation, highlighting ongoing disagreements over the scope of the truce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tensions remain high over maritime access, with Iran warning of possible retaliation if the US maintains its naval blockade in the region. Baghaei said Tehran would take \u201ccountermeasures\u201d if restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz persist, signalling that the situation could escalate if disputes are not resolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also noted that no discussions have yet taken place on extending the ceasefire, and that mediation efforts led by Pakistan are currently focused on ending hostilities while safeguarding Iran\u2019s strategic interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The standoff follows a series of escalatory actions earlier this year, including Iran\u2019s restrictions on vessels linked to the US and Israel after joint strikes on Iranian territory, and Washington\u2019s subsequent blockade targeting Iranian maritime routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Amid these tensions, reports indicate that a second round of US-Iran talks could take place in Pakistan soon, raising cautious hopes for further diplomatic engagement even as both sides maintain a hardline stance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
