The Canadian Prime Minister has boldly asserted that, “It’s our future. We are taking back control”, which has come two days after US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick blasted Canada’s trade strategy, ahead of reviewing the current version of North America’s free trade agreement and blasted Ottawa’s trade partnership with China.

Lutnick said at a private meeting that the current US-Mexico-Canada agreement needs to be “reconsidered and reimagined” and that Canada has taken advantage of the generosity bestowed upon by the American economy. Meanwhile, uncertainty about the trade pact, has slowed investment and hiring. In a bid to reduce economic reliance on the US, Carney announced a September investment summit aimed at attracting $730 billion in investment in Canada.

Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada’s ties to the U.S. have become “weaknesses” that must be corrected, as workers in Canada’s auto, steel and lumber industries remain under threat due to U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs. “The U.S. has fundamentally changed its approach to trade, raising its tariffs to levels last seen during the Great Depression”, Carney said on yesterday. “Many of our former strengths, based on our close ties to America, have become weaknesses, weaknesses that we must correct”.

The prime minister framed his video as a chance to talk to Canadians directly about the threats the country faces, and he said regular updates on Canada’s diversification efforts would be on the way.

“Security can’t be achieved by ignoring the obvious or downplaying the very real threats that we Canadians face”, Carney said. “I will never sugarcoat our challenges. Instead, I’ll talk to you directly and regularly about the plan”.

Earlier while responding to a suggestion, from Canada’s former trade negotiator, Steve Verheul, who had questioned that time is on the Canadian side because political pressure on the U.S. President is going to increase over time as the American economy wavers, Lutnick had then said, “Carney has a problem with us. He gets on a plane and he goes to China. Does he think the Chinese economy is going to buy his stuff? China is entirely an export-driven economy, right? So, what do you do? Carney came back and said, ‘Oh, we’ll take their electric cars’. I mean, is this nuts?”

As part of the agreement, the Canadian government will allow 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles into its market at a tariff rate of 6.1%, down from 100%. In exchange, China agreed to lower tariffs on Canadian canola to 15% and remove levies on Canadian canola meal, lobsters, crab and peas until at least the end of 2026.

Back at home, the Deputy Leader of the Conservative Party – Melissa Lantsman have argued that Carney has failed to make meaningful progress on major projects, despite new powers allowing his government to bypass provisions of some federal laws. “What has Carney delivered? More speeches, more so-called guidance, more agreements to make agreements”, Lantsman said. “Canadians don’t need forward guidance. They live in the real world, not the Bank of Canada press conference world”.

Lantsman further stated the country “needs a government that stops blocking the projects that create jobs, grow pay cheques and make this country more energy independent. The Liberals have had their decade, and it’s been another year. It’s time for results.

Prime Minister, Mark Carney have said that he would invite investors to a meeting in September from 14 to 15, 2026, in Toronto, Ontario seeking to attract about $730 billion in investment in Canada. This Summit will convene the world’s largest investors, including top CEOs, entrepreneurs, and prominent global business leaders. The Summit is focused on attracting new investment into Canada to advance Canada’s nation-building projects, create new career opportunities for Canadians, and grow our economy. The Summit will be hosted by the federal government in partnership with the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPP Investments) and the Public Sector Pension Investment Board (PSP Investments), two of Canada’s largest and most sophisticated institutional investors.

Team Maverick.

Ottawa; April 2026: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney yesterday (19th April 2026, late evening local time) have said, that his country’s close ties with the US have become “weaknesses” as Canada looks to become less dependent on United States ahead of major trade negotiations this year.
