New Delhi, April 2026: Emphasising the cultural and civilisational importance of Sanskrit, Mohan Bhagwat, chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), on Monday described the ancient language as the \u201cvery soul\u201d of India and a key element of its enduring identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bhagwat was speaking at the inauguration of the central office of Samskrita Bharati in Delhi, an organisation committed to promoting Sanskrit as a living, spoken language. The event underscored ongoing efforts to revive Sanskrit not merely as a classical language but as a modern medium of communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Addressing the gathering, Bhagwat said that while Sanskrit is technically a language, its significance goes far beyond linguistic boundaries. He described it as the foundation of India\u2019s ancient traditions of thought, culture, and way of life\u2014traditions that continue to influence the nation even today. According to him, India is not just a geographical or political entity, but a living civilisation rooted in timeless values, with Sanskrit playing a central role in preserving that continuity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reflecting on his own early experiences, Bhagwat recalled that Sanskrit initially appeared difficult to him during his school years, largely because of the way it was taught. The emphasis on memorising verses created a perception that the language was complex. However, he noted that the same verses felt natural and easy when heard in everyday conversations at home, highlighting the importance of context and method in language learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He pointed out that this perception of difficulty still persists among students today. Bhagwat stressed that the most effective way to learn any language is not through textbooks alone, but through regular conversation and immersion. Listening, speaking, and engaging with others who use the language, he said, make the learning process natural and effortless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Drawing from his travels across the country, Bhagwat shared that even when he encounters unfamiliar regional languages, he is often able to grasp their essence through exposure and interaction. This, he said, reinforces the idea that language acquisition is best achieved through continuous practice rather than rote learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The RSS chief also praised Samskrita Bharati for its efforts in reviving interest in Sanskrit across India. He noted that within a relatively short span, the organisation has successfully encouraged people to reconnect with the language. According to him, there has been a noticeable shift in public perception over the past 15 years, with increasing appreciation for Sanskrit\u2019s relevance in modern times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bhagwat observed that changing social and cultural dynamics are prompting people to rediscover their roots. In such a scenario, he said, providing opportunities to learn and understand Sanskrit becomes an important mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Commenting on the inauguration of the new office, Bhagwat remarked that while such infrastructure brings enthusiasm, it is ultimately a result of the organisation\u2019s expanding work rather than its driving force.
