New Delhi, April 2026 : South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on Monday paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat, marking a symbolic start to his three-day state visit to India. The tribute reflected shared values of peace, harmony, and non-violence between the two nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a message shared on X, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted the significance of the gesture, noting that President Lee\u2019s visit underscores a commitment to fostering global peace and cooperation inspired by Gandhi\u2019s ideals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Earlier in the day, President Lee was accorded a ceremonial welcome at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan. He was warmly received by President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The ceremony featured a vibrant reception, with children dressed in traditional attire holding the Indian tricolour and the South Korean national flag, symbolising the friendship between the two countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
President Lee arrived in New Delhi on Sunday, accompanied by First Lady Kim Hea Kyung. He was received at the airport by Minister of State for Corporate Affairs Harsh Malhotra. According to the MEA, the visit represents an \u201cimportant milestone\u201d in strengthening the Special Strategic Partnership between India and the Republic of Korea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Sunday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met President Lee and expressed confidence that the visit would deepen bilateral ties across multiple sectors. He emphasised the importance of continued engagement at the highest levels to further expand cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During his visit, President Lee is scheduled to hold extensive bilateral talks with Prime Minister Modi. The discussions are expected to focus on enhancing collaboration in key sectors such as shipbuilding, trade, investments, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and other critical and emerging technologies. Both leaders will also explore ways to strengthen people-to-people connections and cultural exchanges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition to bilateral cooperation, the two sides will exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest, reflecting their shared commitment to stability and development in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prime Minister Modi is also set to host a luncheon in honour of the visiting leader, while President Murmu will hold formal talks with President Lee and host a state banquet at Rashtrapati Bhavan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The MEA noted that India and South Korea share a multifaceted relationship rooted in ancient civilisational links and common values such as democracy and the rule of law. President Lee\u2019s visit is seen as an opportunity not only to strengthen existing partnerships but also to explore new avenues of cooperation in rapidly evolving sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The visit builds on recent high-level engagements between the two leaders. Prime Minister Modi and President Lee had previously met on the sidelines of global forums, including the G20 Summit in Johannesburg and the G7 Summit in Canada, reflecting the growing momentum in bilateral ties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
