Kurseong (West Bengal) April 2026 : Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday assured that the long-pending Gorkha issue in North Bengal would be resolved within six months if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) forms the government in West Bengal. Addressing a large election rally in Kurseong, located in the Darjeeling district, Shah said that only the BJP possesses the political will and understanding required to address the concerns of the Gorkha community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Highlighting the historical neglect faced by the Gorkhas, Shah asserted that the issue has remained unresolved for decades due to the failure of successive governments. He criticised both the Congress and the Trinamool Congress (TMC), alleging that they lacked genuine intent to resolve the problems of the hill communities. According to him, these parties have done injustice not only to the Darjeeling region but also to the \u201cpatriotic Gorkha brothers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shah emphasised that the Gorkha issue is complex and cannot be resolved through unilateral decisions or by a single political entity without understanding the ground realities. \u201cThe Gorkha issue has been ongoing for decades, and no other party has been able to resolve it. Only the BJP understands the sentiments and concerns of the Gorkhas,\u201d he said. He added that within six months of forming the government, visible changes would be brought about, ensuring that the community experiences progress and stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During his address, Shah assured the gathering that the BJP would create an environment where Gorkhas could live with dignity, peace, and security. \u201cWithin a few years of a BJP government, you will see happiness on the faces of Gorkhas. We will find a solution that allows them to live without fear,\u201d he said, expressing confidence in his party\u2019s approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Gorkha community, primarily residing in the Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts, has long been engaged in a struggle for identity, autonomy, and recognition. The demand for a separate state, commonly referred to as Gorkhaland, has been at the centre of multiple movements over the years. While Shah did not directly address the demand for statehood, he acknowledged the importance of resolving the broader issues faced by the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also pointed out that the BJP has made several attempts in the past to initiate dialogue on the matter. According to him, three meetings were convened to discuss the issue, but representatives from the state government, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, did not participate. This, he claimed, stalled progress toward a resolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shah further raised concerns over the alleged removal of Gorkha names from voter lists during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. He assured that if the BJP comes to power in the state, all such names would be restored, ensuring that no eligible voter is disenfranchised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Union Minister reiterated that the persistence of the Gorkha issue is largely due to a lack of political will from previous governments. He stressed that the BJP government would work in accordance with the aspirations of the people of the Darjeeling hills and ensure a time-bound solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The BJP has maintained a strong presence in the Darjeeling Lok Sabha constituency since 2009, and resolving the Gorkha issue remains one of its key political commitments in the region. Shah\u2019s remarks are seen as part of the party\u2019s broader strategy to consolidate support among hill communities ahead of the state elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
