Hyderabad, April 2026 : Public transport services across Telangana were severely disrupted on Wednesday as employees of the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) launched an indefinite strike, bringing bus operations to a near-complete halt and causing widespread inconvenience to commuters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The strike began at midnight after talks between the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of employees\u2019 unions and the state government failed to produce a breakthrough. As a result, TGSRTC buses remained off the roads across all 90 depots in the state, affecting daily travel for lakhs of passengers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Commuters bore the brunt of the disruption, particularly in Hyderabad, where bus stations such as the Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station and Jubilee Bus Station wore a deserted look. With public transport unavailable, many people were forced to rely on private vehicles, auto-rickshaws, and ride-hailing services, often at higher costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Striking employees staged protests outside bus depots, demanding immediate action on their long-pending demands. Police personnel were deployed at key locations to maintain order and prevent any untoward incidents during the protests. At a few places, limited services were maintained through electric buses operated by contract staff, but these efforts did little to ease the overall disruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
TGSRTC operates around 9,500 buses, including hired and electric vehicles, and serves nearly 25 lakh passengers daily. The sudden halt in services has therefore had a significant impact on both urban and rural mobility across the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
TGSRTC Managing Director V.C. Sajjanar (Nagi Reddy) appealed to employees to resume duties, stating that the government is willing to address their demands in a phased manner. He also alleged that certain unions were misleading workers and insisted that a committee of senior IAS officers had already been constituted to resolve the issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, JAC leaders rejected the government\u2019s assurances, stating that their demands\u2014numbering 32\u2014have been pending for a long time and require immediate resolution. They expressed dissatisfaction with the committee\u2019s request for four weeks to examine the issues, calling it a delaying tactic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
JAC Chairman Eeduru Venkanna said that all unions have united in support of the strike and reiterated that the protest would continue until concrete steps are taken. The primary demand of the employees is the merger of TGSRTC with the state government, a promise they claim was included in the ruling party\u2019s election manifesto but has not yet been fulfilled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Venkanna further alleged that under the guise of expanding electric bus operations, authorities are attempting to transfer employees from Hyderabad depots to districts, adding to worker unrest. He noted that the unions had issued a strike notice 41 days ago and were compelled to take this step after repeated delays in addressing their concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With no immediate resolution in sight, the strike is expected to continue, raising concerns about prolonged disruption to public transport and the daily lives of millions of commuters across Telangana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
