Spread across approximately 134.7 square kilometres in the dry deciduous forests of the Malwa-Nimar region, Kheoni Sanctuary was once considered merely a \u2018transit corridor\u2019 connecting larger forest areas like Ratapani. Today, it has evolved into a safe breeding ground for tigers. Chief Minister Dr. Yadav attributed this transformation to well-planned policies and sustained conservation efforts by the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tigers \u2018Yuvraj\u2019 and \u2018Meera\u2019 have played a key role in giving Kheoni a new identity by making it their permanent habitat. The Forest Department has confirmed the birth of three cubs to Meera, which are now actively moving around the forest under their mother\u2019s watch. At present, nearly a dozen tigers are reported in Kheoni, indicating a clear ecological revival of the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The increasing wildlife activity in Kheoni, including the presence of wild dogs (dholes), leopards, hyenas, jackals and bears, along with rare herbivores like the four-horned antelope (Chousinga)\u2014reflects the restoration of a balanced predator-prey chain and a healthy ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The foundation of wildlife conservation in Kheoni was laid in 1982, when the sanctuary area was expanded to include forest regions of Sehore district. This decision has now proved to be a lifeline for wildlife. The state government is further working to strengthen this transit corridor network by developing the Omkareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
