Raipur<\/em> : Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Shri Vishnudev Sai<\/strong> held an in-depth discussion with Prime Minister Narendra Modi<\/strong> regarding the construction of the Multipurpose Bodhghat Dam Project<\/strong> and the Indravati-Mahanadi Interlinking Project<\/strong> as national-level initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n

Highlighting the significance of these projects, CM Sai stated that both would collectively bring irrigation to approximately 7 lakh hectares of land<\/strong>, thus playing a vital role in the comprehensive development of the Bastar region<\/strong>. He emphasized that Bastar, which has been affected by Naxalism for years, has lagged behind in irrigation infrastructure. To address this gap and fast-track the region’s development, the state government is committed to implementing these two major water projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bodhghat Project: A Game Changer for Bastar<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Multipurpose Bodhghat Dam Project<\/strong> is proposed on the Indravati River<\/strong>, a major tributary of the Godavari River<\/strong>. This project has been in discussion for years and was even mentioned in the 1980 award of the Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal<\/strong>. While other states have already implemented their respective projects listed in the award, Bodhghat remained delayed due to its remote location and Naxalite disturbances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CM Sai asserted that the Bodhghat project would significantly boost irrigation coverage, power generation, fisheries, and drinking water supply<\/strong>, thus doubling Bastar\u2019s development pace<\/strong>. Specifically, the project is expected to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Generate 125 MW of electricity<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Support annual fish production of 4,824 tonnes<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Provide irrigation to 3,78,475 hectares<\/strong> in both Kharif and Rabi seasons<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Ensure 49 million cubic meters (MCM)<\/strong> of drinking water availability<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    The Indravati-Mahanadi Interlinking Project<\/strong> will add irrigation capacity to another 3,00,000+ hectares<\/strong>, including 50,000 hectares in Kanker district<\/strong>, benefiting a wide swath of the tribal region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Location and Features of Bodhghat Project<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    The Bodhghat Dam<\/strong> is planned approximately 8 km from Barsur village<\/strong> in Geedam tehsil<\/strong> of Dantewada district<\/strong>, and about 100 km from Jagdalpur city<\/strong>. The Indravati River<\/strong> flows for 264 km<\/strong> within Chhattisgarh, making it a crucial water resource.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Key features of the Bodhghat project include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      • Total storage capacity<\/strong>: 2,727 MCM<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Surface area at full reservoir level<\/strong>: 10,440 hectares<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        Regional Impact<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

        The Bodhghat project<\/strong> will benefit 269 villages<\/strong> across Dantewada, Bijapur, and Sukma districts<\/strong>, while the Indravati-Mahanadi project<\/strong> will extend irrigation facilities to numerous villages in Kanker district<\/strong>. These initiatives are seen as pivotal in transforming Bastar into a developed, self-reliant, and empowered region<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
