Chennai<\/strong> : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin<\/strong> today inaugurated 208 newly established Urban Wellness Centres<\/strong> built at a cost of \u20b952 crore and 50 Primary Health Centres (PHCs)<\/strong> constructed at \u20b960 crore. The inauguration took place during a health and public welfare programme held in Vellore, Alathur, and Thoothukudi districts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initiative is part of the Tamil Nadu government\u2019s continued efforts to provide accessible and high-quality healthcare<\/strong>. These new facilities aim to bring primary and preventive healthcare closer to urban populations<\/strong>, especially in underserved areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strengthening Urban Healthcare Infrastructure<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In alignment with the government\u2019s policy laid out in GO No.110 dated May 7, 2022, Chief Minister Stalin had earlier announced the establishment of 708 new Urban Wellness Centres<\/strong> in 21 corporations and 63 municipalities with an estimated budget of \u20b9177 crore. In the first phase<\/strong>, 500 centres were constructed at \u20b9125 crore and inaugurated on June 6, 2023. These centres have since been providing effective healthcare services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, under the second phase<\/strong>, 208 more Urban Wellness Centres have been added, each built at \u20b925 lakh. These centres will serve as decentralised hubs offering essential health services near people\u2019s residences<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each centre will have one doctor, a nurse, a health inspector, and a support staff member<\/strong>. These health workers will serve 20,000\u201325,000 people per centre<\/strong> in two shifts: 8 AM to 12 Noon and 4 PM to 8 PM. The initiative is part of the \u201cMakkalai Thedi Maruthuvam\u201d (Healthcare at Your Doorstep)<\/strong> and \u201cInnu Uyir Kaapom – 48\u201d<\/strong> programmes that aim to enhance public health and prevent lifestyle diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Comprehensive Services for Urban Communities<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The newly inaugurated wellness centres will offer 12 types of essential medical services<\/strong>, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Maternal and child health services<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Adolescent and reproductive health<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Family planning and immunisation<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Management of communicable and non-communicable diseases<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Eye, ear, nose, throat, dental, and geriatric care<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Palliative and mental health support<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    These services will especially benefit urban poor, women, and marginalized groups<\/strong>, ensuring equitable healthcare access without any financial burden<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The centres will also be digitally integrated through e-Sanjeevani<\/strong>, enabling referral and teleconsultation services<\/strong> with specialists at higher healthcare institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    50 New Primary Health Centres Opened<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Alongside the Urban Wellness Centres, the Chief Minister also inaugurated 50 new Primary Health Centres<\/strong> across Tamil Nadu. These centres are located in districts including Ariyalur, Dindigul, Kanchipuram, Perambalur, Vellore, Cuddalore, Chennai, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli, Tiruvarur, Erode, Krishnagiri, Tiruppur, Viluppuram, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Nilgiris, Ramanathapuram, Tiruchirappalli, Salem<\/strong>, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The PHCs will provide both outpatient and inpatient care<\/strong>, delivery and postnatal services, immunisation, disease prevention, diagnostic facilities, and implementation of national health programmes like NTEP, NLEP, NPCDCS, NVBDCP, NACP<\/strong>, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A Model for India<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    These health initiatives reflect the Tamil Nadu government’s commitment to universal healthcare access<\/strong>. The Urban Wellness Centres will act as nodal points<\/strong> replacing existing PHCs in cities, ensuring comprehensive care closer to homes and reducing the pressure on government hospitals and medical colleges<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    By establishing strong public health infrastructure and ensuring citizens\u2019 right to health, Tamil Nadu is setting an example<\/strong> for the rest of the country in affordable and accessible healthcare delivery<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
