The public hearings on Guatemala\u2019s Application for permission to intervene in the case concerning Sovereignty over the Sapodilla Cayes \/ Cayos Zapotillos (Belize v. Honduras) concluded today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The delegation of Guatemala was led by HE Ms. Ana Cristina Rodr\u00edguez Pineda, Ambassador<\/p>\n\n\n\n
of the Republic of Guatemala to the Kingdom of the Netherlands, as Agent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The delegation of Belize was led by HE Mr. Assad Shoman, Special Envoy of the Prime Minister of Belize responsible for sovereignty matters, as Agent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The delegation of Honduras was led by HE Ms Patricia Licona Cubero, Counsellor, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Honduras, as Agent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the end of the presentation of their respective arguments, the Agents of Guatemala, Belize<\/p>\n\n\n\n
and Honduras made the following requests to the Court:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For Guatemala<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cFor the reasons set out in its Application for permission to intervene, and during the <\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n oral hearings, the Republic of Guatemala respectfully requests the Court to permit<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n it to intervene in the case concerning Sovereignty over the Sapodilla Cayes \/ Cayos<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Zapotillos (Belize v. Honduras) pursuant to Article 62 of the Statute<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For Belize<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBelize does not object to Guatemala being permitted to intervene <\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n in this case pursuant to Article 62 of the Court\u2019s Statute<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For Honduras<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIn accordance with Article 60 of the Rules of Court, and having regard to the<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Application for permission to intervene filed by the Republic of Guatemala <\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n and its oral arguments, the Republic of Honduras submits the following:<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n The Application filed by the Republic of Guatemala is redundant and an abuse of<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n the institution of intervention, and must therefore be found inadmissible in limine.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Furthermore, Guatemala has not complied with the requirements established by the<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Statute and the Rules of Court, namely Article 62 and Article 81 respectively.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Honduras (1) objects to permission to intervene being granted and (2) requests<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n the Court to reject the Application for permission to intervene filed by Guatemala<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Court will now begin its deliberation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Court\u2019s decision will be delivered at a public sitting, the date of which will be announced<\/p>\n\n\n\n in due course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Team Maverick<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" The public hearings on Guatemala\u2019s Application for permission to intervene in the case concerning Sovereignty over the Sapodilla Cayes \/ Cayos Zapotillos (Belize v.
