Mumbai, Jan 2026<\/strong> : As campaigning heats up for elections in Maharashtra\u2019s 29 municipal corporations, Shiv Sena Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray (UBT) has launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing it of sacrificing ideological principles for the sake of political power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an editorial in the party mouthpiece Saamana<\/em>, the Thackeray faction labelled the BJP\u2019s recent manoeuvres in the state as a \u201cshameful display of hypocrisy\u201d following revelations of local alliances with both the AIMIM and the Congress party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe BJP\u2019s current mindset is to do whatever it takes to remain in power and avoid sitting in opposition. The party lacks an original ideology; its Hindutva is merely a pretense used for selfish political gain. Without the warmth of power, the BJP cannot survive. This is why it is willing to ally with Owaisi\u2019s party. For the sake of power, the BJP first gave the \u2018Adhan\u2019 (call to prayer), then performed the \u2018Nikah\u2019 (marriage), and even the \u2018circumcision,\u2019 but the \u2018Qazi\u2019 recited the prayers so loudly that the BJP\u2019s secret affair became public,\u201d the editorial said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The piece further alleged that the BJP has long used AIMIM as a \u201chidden helper\u201d to divide opposition votes in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Maharashtra. \u201cWhenever Owaisi arrives in Maharashtra to give the \u2018Azaan,\u2019 it signals that the BJP\u2019s election preparations have begun,\u201d it added, describing the partnership as a \u201cromance behind the trees\u201d that has now been revealed openly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Specific municipal council developments were cited as examples of this trend. In the Akot Municipal Council, the BJP is accused of forming an \u201copen marriage\u201d with AIMIM, while in Ambernath, the party allegedly collaborated with Congress to undermine the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction. The editorial noted that despite Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis\u2019s damage-control efforts\u2014ordering a \u201ctriple talaq\u201d from these alliances and promising action\u2014the BJP\u2019s credibility has suffered irreparably. \u201cReputation lost in a drop cannot be regained by a tankful,\u201d it stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Shiv Sena-UBT editorial further criticised BJP\u2019s recruitment strategy, alleging that most of its current MLAs, MPs, and corporators\u2014nearly 80 percent\u2014are former Congress, NCP, or Shiv Sena leaders. \u201cWhile PM Modi promised a \u2018Congress-mukt Bharat,\u2019 the BJP has become a \u2018Congress-yukt BJP.\u2019 The party absorbs corrupt leaders and puts them on display as Hindutva champions, but their real policy is winning elections at any cost,\u201d the piece said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Thackeray faction also highlighted the secrecy surrounding these alliances. According to Saamana<\/em>, negotiations, bargains, and clandestine meetings were held in private until exposures forced them into the public domain, revealing the BJP\u2019s pragmatic but ethically questionable approach to retaining power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
