“Resilient Rise: Ghalibaf’s Re-Election Shakes Iranian Politics!”

In Tehran, former general and current Iranian Parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has been re-elected to lead the Islamic Consultative Assembly. According to the state news agency IRNA, 198 out of 290 members of Parliament voted in favor of the 62-year-old politician on Tuesday. Ghalibaf’s re-election comes as a surprise.

Observers had anticipated his candidacy for the presidency following the death of Ebrahim Raisi. Born in 1961 in the northeastern city of Mashhad, Ghalibaf rose to the rank of general at a young age and served as commander of a division of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps during the Iran-Iraq War from 1980 to 1988. Despite his military background, he pursued political studies and obtained a doctorate in political geography from Tarbiat Modares University in Tehran in 2001. Ghalibaf transitioned to full-time politics in 2005, giving up his military duties. He ran for president in the same year but lost to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

In 2005, he assumed the role of Mayor of Tehran, where his tenure was marked by allegations of corruption. Despite unsuccessful presidential bids in 2013 and 2017, Ghalibaf remained influential in Iranian politics. Critics and moderate politicians may recall his involvement in suppressing student protests in 1999 during his time as a commander. While the Parliament serves as Iran’s legislative institution, real power is centralized in the state leadership, with Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei holding the highest authority.
