Washington, Sept 2026 : US President Donald Trump has announced plans to establish an “AI Force” and appoint an “AI Czar” as Washington intensifies its focus on maintaining leadership in artificial intelligence amid growing competition with China.
In a post on his Truth Social account, Trump said his administration would not allow what he described as the “decimation or destruction” of the artificial intelligence industry. He said the government would support the sector while using existing criminal and civil justice mechanisms to address potential wrongdoing.
Trump said the administration would not “hinder or stifle” the growth of the AI industry, describing the technology as an important development for the US economy. He compared AI with the Industrial Revolution and the emergence of the internet, and said the sector could potentially account for as much as 25 per cent of US gross domestic product.
The President did not provide details about the proposed structure of the “AI Force” or explain the responsibilities and powers that would be assigned to the proposed AI Czar. He said an announcement regarding the appointment would be made in the near future.
Trump also used the post to criticise Democrats, alleging that claims about the destruction of AI were among what he called “hoaxes” promoted by the party. He also referred to the Russia-Ukraine conflict and global warming in the same context.
The announcement comes amid an intensifying debate in the United States over the rapid development of artificial intelligence, including questions about national security, economic competitiveness and potential risks associated with increasingly advanced AI systems.
Earlier this week, US Attorney General Todd Blanche said Washington could not afford to lose the global AI competition to China. He also pledged action against Chinese individuals and companies accused of stealing technology from US businesses.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Blanche described AI as highly beneficial and rejected suggestions that the Justice Department should act as a regulator by slowing or restricting the development of the technology.
“We can’t lose the AI race to China, right?” Blanche said, adding that President Trump and others have made the argument because they believe it reflects a real strategic challenge.
Blanche’s comments came amid questions about warnings from technology executives and experts that rapidly advancing AI systems could create national security and other serious risks.
The Attorney General said the Justice Department would investigate criminal activity associated with AI but would not assume the role of a technology regulator.
Trump’s proposed AI Force and AI Czar are expected to form part of his administration’s broader approach to promoting AI development while addressing criminal misuse and strengthening US technological competitiveness.
