“Breaking Barriers: Sunita Williams Leads Historic Starliner Mission”

Indian-origin NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, alongside Butch Wilmore, has made history by flying aboard Boeing Starliner’s first-ever crewed mission. Williams, 59, became the first woman to fly on the maiden mission of a new human-rated spacecraft.

The crew launched at 10:52 a.m. ET on the United Launch Alliance’s Atlas V rocket from Space Launch Complex-41 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. “Liftoff! Go #AtlasV! Go Centaur! Go #Starliner!” Boeing Space announced on X, adding, “Godspeed, Butch Wilmore and @Astro_Suni!”

This historic flight follows several delays over the years. Initially scheduled for May 7, the launch was postponed due to a helium leak and an issue with the ground power supply at the ULA. This third attempt saw a 90% favorable weather forecast.

Butch Wilmore, 61, commands the flight, with Williams piloting. The duo will spend approximately a week at the International Space Station (ISS) before returning to Earth aboard the reusable crew capsule.
