Man Arrested for Rape and Murder of Doctor at RG Kar Medical College.

Kolkata: A man accused of raping and murdering a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was found to have returned home and slept for a few hours after committing the crime, police reported on Sunday. Later, he washed his clothes in an attempt to remove evidence. However, police discovered bloodstains on his shoes, which were linked to the murder. The accused, a citizen volunteer, was not professionally associated with the hospital but frequently visited the premises.

The body of the post-graduate trainee doctor was discovered inside the hospital’s seminar hall on Friday morning. Colleagues reported that she had gone to the hall to rest after dinner. The crime is believed to have occurred between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. City Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal visited the medical institution for the second time in three days on Sunday and met with representatives of the protesting junior doctors.

The Kolkata Police are awaiting the final post-mortem report to conclude the case. According to a senior police officer, the initial post-mortem report indicated that the doctor was sexually assaulted and then murdered. “We are waiting for the final report before making any conclusions,” the officer said. “The preliminary findings were deeply disturbing, revealing that the doctor, a victim of extreme cruelty, fought to escape but was brutally murdered.”

The initial post-mortem report revealed that the victim had injuries on her eyes, mouth, and private parts, with additional wounds on her legs, neck, hands, and lips. It was suggested that the accused might have killed the doctor before raping her. The officer added that the doctor was sleeping alone in the seminar hall when the accused attacked. She attempted to escape but was strangled to death. It is also suspected that the rape may have occurred after the murder.

The police recovered the clothes and shoes worn by the accused during the crime. When questioned about the involvement of others, the officer stated that no evidence supports that possibility so far. The arrested individual, an outsider who had easy access to various hospital departments, has been charged under Sections 376 (rape) and 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code. He was presented before a Kolkata court and remanded to police custody until August 23.

In response to the incident, Kolkata Police have deployed a large force at the hospital, with a police official stating, “No one will be allowed to enter the hospital premises without proper identification. We will ensure the complete safety of healthcare workers at the hospital.” Additionally, the hospital authorities dismissed two contract security guards from the emergency ward for failing to perform their duties properly.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has vowed to seek the death penalty for the accused. The police commissioner stated, “One of our senior officers handed over the post-mortem report to the deceased doctor’s parents today. Our meeting with the students was productive, and we believe they are satisfied. As per their request, we have removed an assistant police officer.”
