Sri Lanka to hold presidential election on Sept. 21

COLOMBO – Sri Lanka’s Election Commission announced on Friday that the presidential election will take place on September 21. According to a gazette notification, candidate nominations will be held on August 15.

The current president’s term ends on November 17, 2024. As per the constitution, the presidential election must occur between one and two months before the term’s expiration.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who won the presidential election in November 2019, resigned in July 2022 amid a severe economic crisis. Following his resignation, Ranil Wickremesinghe was elected president by parliament.
