Dhaka, Sep 2026 : Prominent Bangladeshi Hindu leader Chinmoy Krishna Das remains in prison despite securing bail in two cases, as his release has been blocked by proceedings in other cases against him, local media reported.
A High Court bench comprising Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher granted bail on Sunday after hearing two separate petitions filed by Chinmoy, spokesperson for the Bangladesh Sammilito Sanatani Jagaran Jot. The cases were registered at the Kotwali Police Station in Chattogram on November 26, 2024, in connection with allegations of vandalism and obstructing police personnel from carrying out their duties.
According to Chinmoy’s lawyer, Apurba Kumar Bhattacharya, the Hindu leader has been in custody since November 25, 2024, and faces six cases, including charges related to murder and sedition. Speaking to The Daily Star, Bhattacharya said Chinmoy had obtained bail in five of the cases through orders issued by the High Court and lower courts.
However, the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division has stayed the High Court order granting bail to Chinmoy in the sedition case, preventing his release from prison despite the bail orders secured in other proceedings.
Chinmoy was arrested in Dhaka on November 25, 2024. He was sent to jail the following day after a Chattogram court rejected his bail application. The same court subsequently rejected another bail plea on December 11.
His arrest triggered protests by members of Bangladesh’s Hindu community, both within the country and internationally, with supporters demanding his release and raising concerns over the treatment of minorities.
The case has also drawn criticism from Hindu advocacy groups abroad. The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) on Monday condemned Chinmoy’s continued detention, describing it as a “travesty” and alleging that he was being subjected to government-sponsored persecution.
CoHNA claimed that Chinmoy had campaigned for the safety and human rights of minorities in Bangladesh and questioned the circumstances surrounding the allegations against him. The organisation also pointed to the political changes in Bangladesh since his arrest, arguing that the concerns of the country’s Hindu minority have persisted despite changes in government.
The advocacy group further alleged that attacks against Hindus and other minorities had continued in Bangladesh and described the situation as a “slow genocide”. It questioned whether international human rights organisations and the US Commission on International Religious Freedom were adequately monitoring developments concerning religious minorities in the South Asian country.
Bangladesh has faced continuing scrutiny over allegations of attacks and discrimination against minority communities, particularly Hindus. Rights groups and advocacy organisations have repeatedly raised concerns about the security of minorities and called for stronger measures to protect religious freedom and human rights.
Chinmoy’s continued detention, despite multiple bail orders, is therefore likely to remain a contentious issue, with his legal team seeking to overcome the remaining proceedings that are preventing his release.
