Lunglei, Sep 2026: A meeting chaired by Lunglei District Deputy Commissioner Pi Navneet Mann was held today at the DC’s office to discuss ongoing and proposed initiatives under Project LEAP (Lunglei’s Empowerment for Access and Equity for all Persons), aimed at empowering Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) in Lunglei district.
Officials from the DC’s Office, Health & Family Welfare Department, Social Welfare Department, Information & Public Relations Department, along with Block Development Officers (BDOs), attended the meeting.
The meeting reviewed various initiatives being implemented under Project LEAP, including the health assessment camps conducted for Persons with Disabilities across different clusters of Lunglei district. The officials also discussed plans and activities proposed to be undertaken between September and December 2026.
As part of a survey conducted to assess the status of Persons with Disabilities in Lunglei district, a total of 1,414 PwDs have been identified and registered. Health assessment camps have been organised at different locations for these beneficiaries.
Of the 867 PwDs who have undergone health assessments so far, 437 have already been provided with Unique Disability Identity (UDID) cards, while 430 are yet to receive them. Officials noted that delays in issuing UDID cards in some cases were due to discrepancies or lack of linkage between Aadhaar details and mobile phone numbers, as well as difficulties in contacting beneficiaries. It was decided that efforts should be made to resolve these issues at the earliest.
The meeting also discussed plans to identify PwDs who have not yet been registered. A door-to-door survey and enumeration drive is proposed to be conducted throughout September to ensure that eligible persons are identified and included in the programme.
Health assessment camps will also continue for both newly identified PwDs and those who have already been registered but are yet to undergo assessments. The camps will begin in Lunglei town during September and will subsequently be organised in villages across different blocks between October and December.
The meeting further discussed plans to distribute assistive devices to eligible beneficiaries in collaboration with ALIMCO within the current year.
Special attention was also given to Children with Special Needs (CwSN). Officials discussed the process for conducting assessments of such children and various measures that could be undertaken to ensure appropriate support, care and educational assistance for them.
The discussions under Project LEAP are aimed at improving access to healthcare, assistive devices, identification and welfare services for Persons with Disabilities across Lunglei district and ensuring that eligible beneficiaries receive timely support and opportunities for greater inclusion and empowerment.
