Tehran, September 2026 : At least 11 people were killed and seven others injured after a fuel tanker exploded following a traffic accident in western Iran, state-run IRIB news agency reported on Saturday. The blast triggered fires in several nearby vehicles and prompted a major emergency response in the area.
The accident took place on an intercity road linking Sanandaj County in Kurdestan province with Hamedan County in neighbouring Hamedan province. Babak Hodaei, head of emergency medical services at Kurdestan University of Medical Sciences, said the tanker exploded after the traffic accident, setting several vehicles in the vicinity on fire.
Emergency and rescue teams rushed to the site following the incident. The injured were taken to a hospital in Sanandaj for treatment, while rescue personnel continued operations at the accident site. Authorities were assessing the circumstances surrounding the crash and the subsequent explosion.
The latest incident comes after another tanker explosion in the region earlier this year. In July, an oil tanker reportedly exploded in the Strait of Hormuz after striking a naval mine. Iranian media reported that the vessel had allegedly deviated from a route designated by Iranian authorities before entering an area outside the safe maritime traffic corridor.
The Strait of Hormuz is a strategically vital waterway connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. It serves as one of the world's most important energy routes, carrying substantial volumes of crude oil and liquefied natural gas from major Gulf producers to international markets. Any disruption in the waterway can therefore have significant implications for global energy supplies and prices.
The tanker explosion in western Iran also comes against the backdrop of renewed military tensions between Washington and Tehran. The US military said on Saturday that its forces had struck three Iranian crude oil tankers on September 5, following an attack by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) involving ballistic missiles aimed at two US Navy warships operating in regional waters.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) said an American aircraft carrier and a guided-missile destroyer successfully evaded multiple Iranian attacks. No US personnel were injured, according to the command.
CENTCOM said its forces targeted the three Iranian crude oil carriers after the IRGC launched ballistic missiles toward the two US Navy vessels. The development marks a further escalation in an already tense confrontation between the United States and Iran, adding to concerns over the security of shipping and energy infrastructure across the wider Gulf region.
