Tehran, Aug 2026 : Iran on Monday strongly condemned a US military strike on the southern Iranian island of Larak, describing the action as a violation of its sovereignty and an “act of aggression”, while asserting its right to defend itself against further attacks.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry said the US operation had resulted in the deaths and injuries of Iranian military personnel and civilians and caused damage to public and private property. Tehran accused Washington of once again violating Iran’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“The terrorist US Army on Sunday night once again violated Iran's national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the ministry said in a statement, strongly denouncing the strike.
Iran said its subsequent military operations against US positions in the region were carried out in response to the attack and in accordance with what it described as its “inherent right” to legitimate self-defence.
According to the Foreign Ministry, Iranian armed forces launched what it called “defensive and crushing” strikes against US bases in Jordan that had allegedly been used to launch or support the operation against Larak Island.
The ministry also accused the United States and Israel of contributing to instability in regional shipping routes and around the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. Tehran linked the current escalation to military operations against Iran since February 28 and what it described as a US naval blockade.
Iran warned that any further military aggression would trigger a decisive response and said the United States and countries cooperating with Washington would be responsible for the consequences.
The latest escalation followed a US military operation against two Iranian launchers on Larak Island on Sunday. US Central Command spokesperson Tim Hawkins said the targets were struck after Iranian forces were observed preparing to launch rockets carrying sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz.
The US said the operation was aimed at protecting the strategic waterway and maintaining the free movement of commercial shipping. The strike was reportedly the first known US attack on Iranian territory since late July.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) subsequently announced that Iranian military personnel and civilians had been killed or wounded in what it described as a “US-Israeli” attack. The IRGC vowed that the operation would be met with retaliation.
Iran later said its aerospace forces conducted drone and ballistic missile strikes against the US King Hussein and Al-Azraq air bases in Jordan. Tehran said the attacks targeted technical and maintenance facilities, as well as areas housing US fighter aircraft.
The Iranian Army separately claimed that it launched drone attacks against Al Minhad Air Base in the United Arab Emirates, targeting locations where US helicopters and personnel were allegedly stationed.
The developments have raised fresh concerns over the potential expansion of military confrontation across the Gulf and surrounding region. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global energy and shipping corridor, making any disruption in the area a matter of international concern.
The UAE strongly condemned the reported Iranian attack on its territory, calling it a direct threat to the safety of citizens and residents as well as the country’s security, stability and territorial integrity.
The rapidly escalating exchange of strikes has placed additional pressure on regional governments, many of which have sought to avoid being drawn directly into the confrontation between Iran, the United States and Israel.
Iran, meanwhile, has maintained that its military responses are defensive in nature and warned that it would continue responding to attacks until what it considers the external threat against the country is removed.
