Tehran, September 2026 : Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed that its naval forces attacked a US unmanned surface vessel that was allegedly attempting to enter a restricted area of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, as tensions between Tehran and Washington continue to escalate.
In a statement broadcast by Iranian state television IRIB, the Revolutionary Guards said the American remotely operated vessel was targeted while trying to enter what Iran described as a protected zone in the Strait of Hormuz. The claim came only hours after Iran and the United States exchanged strikes, marking another escalation in their prolonged confrontation.
The latest clashes follow US military operations launched last week and come amid a broader deadlock in negotiations between the two countries. The confrontation has now entered its sixth month, with both sides continuing to issue warnings against further military action.
Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned that any further aggression against the country would trigger a response that would be “faster, heavier, and more painful.” His remarks reflected Tehran’s increasingly firm stance as military and economic pressure from Washington continues.
Iranian Economy Minister Ali Madanizadeh, meanwhile, said Tehran would respond to US economic pressure by pursuing domestic reforms rather than changing its broader policy direction. He rejected suggestions that sanctions would force Iran to alter its course, signalling that the government intends to withstand continued economic pressure.
Diplomatic efforts have also continued amid the escalating military situation. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan spoke by telephone with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, to discuss regional developments and the latest stage of negotiations between Tehran and Washington. Turkey’s Anadolu agency, citing sources, reported that the two ministers held a comprehensive discussion on developments surrounding the talks.
In a separate diplomatic engagement, Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani discussed bilateral relations and the security situation around the Strait of Hormuz with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty. The discussions come as regional countries remain concerned about the impact of the conflict on shipping and energy supplies.
The violence has also spread into Lebanon. Lebanese authorities said four people were killed and 20 others injured in Israeli strikes, which Israel said were carried out after Hezbollah launched drones towards its troops in southern Lebanon. Lebanon’s Health Ministry said two people were killed in Nabatieh al-Fawqa and two women died in nearby Arab Salim. The incidents represent another escalation despite a fragile ceasefire in the region.
The US Central Command said on September 6 that it had redirected 92 commercial vessels, disabled three and boarded two as part of efforts to enforce its blockade and ensure compliance.
Shipping monitor TankerTrackers reported that the crew of an Iranian oil tanker destroyed in a US strike was safe. It said a lifeboat had been lowered before the attack, suggesting that the crew may have received advance warning.
Meanwhile, Iranian authorities have arrested several people accused of appearing in an online video showing individuals waving the flag of the banned People’s Mujahedin Organisation of Iran (MEK). State television said authorities had identified and detained everyone shown in the footage, although it did not disclose the number of arrests. The video reportedly showed people riding motorcycles through empty Iranian streets while displaying the opposition group’s white-and-red flag.
