Jerusalem, Sep 2026 : Israel carried out fresh strikes in southern Lebanon on Wednesday after Hezbollah launched two explosive drones towards Israeli troops, marking another serious test of the ceasefire reached in June.
Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) reported Israeli shelling and airstrikes on several areas, including Nabatieh al-Fawqa, Arab Salim and the Ali al-Taher Ridge. Israeli forces also opened machine-gun fire towards Zawtar al-Sharqiyah, according to the agency.
The Israeli military said Hezbollah launched two explosive drones overnight towards its troops stationed in the Ali al-Taher Ridge area. Israeli forces intercepted one of the drones, while no casualties were immediately reported.
The Israeli army said it subsequently carried out strikes against what it described as Hezbollah infrastructure in the Nabatieh area. It also claimed that some of the targeted sites were being used to plan and direct attacks against Israeli troops.
The latest escalation comes despite a US-brokered ceasefire reached in June that significantly reduced the intensity of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah. However, Israeli military operations and strikes inside Lebanon have continued, while Israeli troops remain in positions seized during the latest conflict.
According to Lebanon’s Emergency Operations Center under the Ministry of Public Health, Israeli attacks have killed 4,353 people in Lebanon since the latest round of fighting began in March. The figures were contained in a report issued on Tuesday.
Lebanon’s NNA said Israeli military operations have continued across parts of southern Lebanon, involving airstrikes, artillery bombardments, ground incursions and demolition operations.
On Sunday, Israeli warplanes reportedly struck an area between Zawtar al-Sharqiyah and Mayfadoun at around 7 pm before carrying out another strike in an area between Zawtar and Arnoun. Israeli forces also conducted large-scale explosions in Arnoun al-Shaqif and near Yahmar al-Shaqif, the agency reported.
The NNA further reported that Israeli forces carried out machine-gun fire from Haddatha towards the outskirts of Aita al-Jabal. A drone also struck the outskirts of Nabatieh al-Fawqa.
The continuing military activity has added to concerns over the durability of the June ceasefire and the prospects for stability in southern Lebanon, where communities have faced repeated displacement and destruction.
Amid the renewed tensions, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam on Sunday pledged that residents displaced from southern Lebanon would eventually return “safely and with dignity.”
Salam stressed that southern Lebanon should not remain an open arena for wars and conflicts decided outside the country. He also reiterated that the Lebanese state must retain exclusive authority over decisions concerning war and peace.
The latest exchange highlights the fragile nature of the ceasefire, with Hezbollah’s drone launches followed by Israeli military action raising fresh concerns about the possibility of renewed escalation along the Lebanon-Israel border.
