Bishkek, Aug 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin once again offered a glimpse of their warm personal rapport as the two leaders travelled together in the same car to the opening ceremony of the World Nomad Games at Bishkek Arena on Monday evening.
The unusual but symbolic journey came shortly after Modi and Putin concluded their bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Kyrgyzstan’s capital. The shared ride quickly emerged as one of the notable moments of Modi’s visit, underscoring the close engagement between the two leaders and the longstanding strategic partnership between India and Russia.
The moment also brought back memories of another similar episode during the SCO Leaders’ Summit in China’s Tianjin last September, when Modi and Putin travelled together in the same vehicle to the venue of their bilateral meeting.
The recurring gesture has been described by observers and social media users as PM Modi’s “car diplomacy”, with images and videos of the two leaders travelling together generating considerable attention online. While the journey itself was brief, it was viewed as another visual representation of the personal comfort and diplomatic familiarity shared by the Indian and Russian leaders.
The symbolism of the car ride came against the backdrop of substantive discussions between Modi and Putin on Ukraine, bilateral relations, global affairs and upcoming multilateral engagements.
During their bilateral meeting earlier on Monday, Modi reiterated India’s support for all efforts aimed at establishing peace in Ukraine. He stressed that prolonged conflict was harmful not only to the countries directly involved but also to humanity as a whole.
“As you know, India supports all efforts towards peace and will continue to do so. Every day spent in war pushes humanity backwards, while every step taken towards peace fills humanity with a new hope and enthusiasm. We must move from an endless war towards an end to the war. This is essential for the well-being of humanity,” Modi said in his opening remarks.
The Prime Minister described India’s position as a “call of humanity” and emphasised that disputes should be resolved through peaceful means and at the earliest possible opportunity.
“The land of Gandhi and the land of Buddha has one message: to follow the path of peace,” Modi said, referring to India’s longstanding philosophical traditions of non-violence and peaceful coexistence.
The Ukraine conflict has remained a significant issue in India’s diplomatic conversations with Russia and other major global powers. New Delhi has consistently maintained that dialogue and diplomacy are the preferred means of resolving the conflict while continuing its engagement with all sides.
The meeting also focused on the future of India-Russia relations. Modi said India was looking forward to welcoming Putin and the Russian delegation to the BRICS Summit scheduled to be hosted by India next month.
“In a few days from now, India will host the BRICS Summit. All Indians are very eager to welcome you and your delegation to India. Your visit will further strengthen our bilateral relations and also enhance dialogue and cooperation within BRICS,” Modi said.
The Bishkek meeting followed External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s recent visit to Moscow, where he met Putin and conveyed a personal message from Modi.
“Pleased to call on President Vladimir Putin of Russia in Moscow today. Handed over a personal message from Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Jaishankar said in a post on X after meeting Putin on August 24.
Jaishankar also briefed the Russian President about discussions held during the 27th Session of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation, or IRIGC-TEC.
The commission meeting was co-chaired by Jaishankar and Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov and covered a wide range of issues, including economic cooperation, energy, fertilizers, nuclear power and high-technology sectors.
Putin, during his meeting with Jaishankar, highlighted the depth of India-Russia relations, saying the two countries had maintained cooperation across governmental, parliamentary and economic channels for decades.
“We continue to work together in virtually all areas. This includes governmental ties, interparliamentary ties, and economic cooperation,” Putin said.
He also noted that bilateral trade had grown during the current year after recording a slight decline previously. Putin attributed part of the improvement to Modi’s personal attention to the development of Russian-Indian relations.
The Russian President also conveyed his greetings to Modi and expressed his expectation of meeting the Prime Minister during the SCO engagement.
Economic cooperation remained a key component of the discussions. Putin pointed to the importance of fertilizer supplies to India and said Moscow was ready to increase supplies, an issue of particular significance for Indian agriculture.
“We are doing everything to address this issue for Indian farmers, for agriculture; we are increasing these supplies and are ready to do so further,” Putin said.
Nuclear energy and cooperation in high-technology sectors were also identified as areas where bilateral engagement was progressing steadily.
Jaishankar, for his part, said he had a positive report to share regarding India-Russia economic cooperation, nuclear energy and fertilizer supplies. He described the relationship between the two countries as a “strong, robust bilateral partnership”.
Against this backdrop, Modi and Putin’s shared journey to the World Nomad Games added a highly visible personal dimension to an otherwise substantive diplomatic engagement.
The moment also highlighted the continuing prominence of the India-Russia relationship despite shifting geopolitical equations. From discussions on global conflicts and economic cooperation to meetings at major multilateral forums, both sides continue to maintain high-level political engagement.
