PM Modi Joins Yoga Session in Tashkent, Highlights India-Uzbekistan Cultural Ties

TASHKENT, Aug 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in a special yoga session organised by the Yoga Federation of Uzbekistan in Tashkent on Sunday, as part of his two-day visit to the Central Asian nation.

During the session, Modi interacted with participants and highlighted the growing popularity of yoga as a means of promoting health, well-being and closer people-to-people connections. His participation also underscored the expanding cultural engagement between India and Uzbekistan.

Modi arrived in Tashkent on Saturday for a two-day State Visit and was warmly received by Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev at the airport. The two leaders exchanged greetings and shared a warm embrace, setting the tone for the Prime Minister’s engagements during the visit.

Soon after his arrival, Modi visited the Yangi Uzbekistan Monument along with President Mirziyoyev. He described the monument as a reflection of the aspirations and progress of the Uzbek people.

“Upon landing in Tashkent, I went to lay a wreath at the Yangi Uzbekistan Monument with President Mirziyoyev,” Modi said in a post on X. He added that the monument represented the aspirations and development of Uzbekistan and that he was pleased to begin his visit there.

The Prime Minister, accompanied by Mirziyoyev, also visited Yangi Uzbekistan Park, where the two leaders viewed artworks depicting Uzbekistan’s rich cultural heritage and history. The visit highlighted the importance both countries attach to their historical and civilisational links.

A major highlight of Modi’s arrival was the enthusiastic welcome extended by members of the Indian community in Tashkent. Large numbers of Indian-origin residents gathered to greet the Prime Minister, reflecting the strong people-to-people ties between the two countries.

Modi said the Indian diaspora played an important role in strengthening bilateral relations and described it as a “living bridge” between India and Uzbekistan.

“Overwhelmed by the warmth and affection of the Indian community in Tashkent. Our diaspora is a living bridge between India and Uzbekistan, strengthening the bonds of friendship between our nations,” he said.

The welcome ceremony also featured performances combining Indian and Uzbek musical traditions. Modi praised the cultural presentation, noting the fusion of instruments from both countries.

“A captivating fusion of Indian and Uzbek musical traditions! The Tabla blends beautifully with the Doira and Chang, showcasing the deep cultural connect between India and Uzbekistan,” he said while sharing a glimpse of the performance.

The Prime Minister’s interaction with the Indian community also included a traditional Raksha Bandhan gesture. Several women tied rakhis on Modi’s wrist as he greeted members of the diaspora.

Modi’s visit is focused on strengthening India-Uzbekistan relations across several areas, including trade, investment, defence, energy, digital connectivity and education. Cultural exchanges and people-to-people contacts are also expected to feature prominently during his engagements.

His participation in the yoga programme, along with his interaction with the Indian community and visit to important cultural landmarks, has added a strong people-centric dimension to the diplomatic visit.
