CASTEL GANDOLFO, Aug 2026 : Pope Leo XIV joined thousands of faithful at Lake Albano for a Marian procession dedicated to Our Lady of the Lake, concluding the evening with a heartfelt prayer for peace and for children and families suffering from the effects of war.
The Pope arrived by boat at the lakeshore as the procession, which had begun at the Church of Mary Most Holy of the Lake, reached its conclusion. Travelling aboard the Falco, decorated with yellow and white flowers, Pope Leo joined the faithful gathered along the shore and led them in prayer before the statue of the Virgin Mary.
As the sun set over Lake Albano, the Pope entrusted the Church and people around the world to Mary, describing her as a “woman of listening and service”. His prayer focused on a world affected by armed conflicts, suffering, fear and division.
Addressing Mary with what he described as a filial heart, Pope Leo prayed for a Church that would remain courageous in proclaiming the Gospel, humble in service and steadfast in charity.
He particularly entrusted to Mary those who have been wounded by war, asking her to encourage humanity to seek peace.
“To your loving protection, we entrust all the peoples of the earth,” the Pope prayed, asking Mary to look with kindness upon children affected by conflict and to inspire in everyone a desire for peace.
Prayer for Children and the Vulnerable
The Pope’s prayer also focused on people facing suffering and hardship. He asked Mary to help transform hatred into forgiveness and fear into hope.
“Where hatred grows, teach us forgiveness; where fear prevails, restore hope,” he prayed.
Pope Leo called for special care for children, the elderly, the sick, families, young people and those experiencing loneliness. His appeal came against the backdrop of continuing conflicts around the world that have displaced millions and left countless children exposed to violence and insecurity.
He also prayed for those entrusted with public responsibilities, urging them to promote justice, freedom, human dignity and the common good.
“Support those who have responsibility in public life,” he prayed, asking that leaders work for the welfare and dignity of every person.
The Pope also remembered people living and working around Lake Albano, as well as visitors who come to the area seeking peace and tranquillity.
He prayed that everyone who turns to Mary would rediscover the path leading to Christ, whom he described as the one Saviour of the world.
Faithful Gather Along the Shore
Before Pope Leo’s arrival, Salesian novices led pilgrims in hymns, Scripture readings, meditation and prayer. Among the songs performed was Eccomi, while passages from the Gospel were read during moments of reflection.
Faithful gathered along the lakeshore, with some watching from beach loungers and pedal boats. Many pilgrims used their mobile phones to record the Pope’s arrival and the historic procession.
Pope Leo became the first Pope to participate in the Our Lady of the Lake procession on Lake Albano itself. Despite the large gathering, the atmosphere remained largely quiet and contemplative.
The Pope travelled across the lake aboard the Falco alongside the statue of the Virgin Mary. The journey lasted around 25 minutes and was accompanied by canoes carrying young participants from the Castel Gandolfo championships, as well as dragon boats and other vessels.
When Pope Leo stepped ashore, he was greeted with applause. Tenor Aurelio Grimaldi and his wife, Elena Kovalova, performed La Vergine degli angeli from Verdi’s La forza del destino, followed by César Franck’s Panis Angelicus. The performances were accompanied on piano by Maestro Massimiliano Franchina.
Local authorities, mayors wearing the Italian tricolour sash and pilgrims gathered in silence as the Pope offered his prayer.
Evening of Prayer for Peace
As the ceremony concluded, pilgrims called out, “Long live the Pope!” and responded with prolonged applause. The Castel Gandolfo marching band then performed, marking the tenth anniversary of its foundation.
As darkness gradually settled over Lake Albano, Pope Leo left the lakeshore and departed in a waiting car. The faithful remained gathered around the statue of Mary, bringing the Marian procession to a close.
The evening served as both a religious celebration and a public appeal for peace, with the Pope placing particular emphasis on those most vulnerable to conflict. His prayer sought comfort for the wounded, hope for families, protection for children and wisdom for leaders responsible for shaping a world still marked by war and division.
